The founding principle of Unesco Biosphere Reserves is \'sustainable development\' - but maybe your question is more about \'development\' as \'building\'?

Whilst clearly in favour of sustainable building practices, I am aware that at a recent meeting many local people raised the question of affordable housing.  There is a perceived tension between the desire for sustainable building practices and the possible cost of them, which could raise the cost of housing for the most vulnerable people.

This issue needs to be addressed, and I don\'t have the expertise to do it.  I would like to see those with expert knowlewdge in both fields come together and make a recommendation to the new Board that would represent a broad housing/building policy.

Hi Sue,

There are many interpretations of what sustainable development means in practice.  In my opinion development on Waiheke should be to a high standard  and should meet the principles of good design - including having a low impact on the natural environment and contributing to the social and economic wellbeing of the Island.  Good design considers the longterm value as well as the short term value.   I think Waiheke should raise the game in terms of what is being delivered.

Thanks for your question.

Hi Sue

As an architect I am for development, but I am also for development done in a sustainable way. It is important that we do things differently or otherwise we will keep destroying our land, water and community.

So how can we make our development more sustainable? By first having an overall plan that ensures our significant ecological sites are protected and that nothing can endanger them. Than we can define what it is that makes Waiheke unique and ensure that our commercial and residential development aligns with this philosophy. To my way of thinking, there is no point in saying one thing and than having our district plan allow typical development occurring.

How we deal with stormwater, sewage and building is also important - ensuring that we design for the sun and use our natural resources for power would be a good start in the right direction.

I hope this helps

thanks

Charissa

Hello Sue

Thank you for asking.  I\'m all for it.

Sustainable development is part of my election manifesto and is a must for the island.  Developement must not only sustain the people but also the environment.  I am in favour of development that increases this island\'s and this island\'s human and other beings ablity to sustain itself.

Hi Sue,

I support 'sustainability' being placed at the core of the Spatial Plan, the creation of which will be one of the first tasks of the incoming Local Board.

Thank you for your questions,
