Do you support prescribing in the next District Plan review that mining (whether underground or open pit) be a prohibited activity on all land zoned "conservation" and "coastal" in the Thames Coromandel District? If not why not ?

Unreservedly yes - and I should have made my position on this clearer in my brochure where I simply indicated \"support\" for for mining per se without qualification.

Thanks

I support banning mining as indicated.  I believe we have enough holes in the Coromandel and we don\'t need any more.  All you need to do is walk up tararu creek rd to see what mining does for the environment.  Water seeping from the hills causing unsightly discolouration of the stream below the outfall and crystal clear water above it.

Thanks for the question....

I don\'t think we should have any mining on conservation or coastal land in the Coromandel. We live in a magical place and we need to respect and protect it.

Mining is not an option:

Prior to taking a neutral stance, the TCDC had already agreed [in dialogue with Newmont and local groups] that mining would not take place north of the Kopu-Hikuai road. The council must restate this position. Mining south of the Kopu-Hikuai should be given similar status. The local authority should join with other affected areas to lobby that Central Government funds and benefits previously suggested to support and encourage mining operations are made available for community-private sector partnerships that generate sustainable employment in these areas.  If Mining is being touted as means of creating jobs, and receiving Government funding for this, then it is iniquitous to only make this support available to a single industry or purpose. We need to consider all possibilities equally, and especially in terms of their environmental impact, social impact, local economic benefits, work-force enhancement, and long-term sustainability.
