Building a vibrant local economy is one of my top five issues and to do that I believe that as a council we need to do the following things,

  1. Council needs to keep up to date with the services being offered by the Ministry of Economic Development and the assistance they offer citizens in order that it is able to accurately inform people as to what is available from the government.  I find the web site www.business.govt.nz provides me with good information in that respect.
  2. In terms of existing business, I would like to assist with the establishment of a “Carterton” business forum or chamber of commerce. I think it is only by bringing existing business people together that we will be able to identify the things that are restricting, inhibiting or assisting growth in our district.  I see Fed Farmers and the general farming community as being essential in this mix.
  3. New businesses will emerge as we develop Carterton and make it attractive for people to want to come and live here.
  4. Business mentoring programs need to be encouraged and promoted as they are an effective, low cost way of developing capability and confidence for new business owners.
