I live on a corner section and mow the native strips outside my boundary. To dump the clippings, a charge of $2 per bag is payable to the Council. Do you think this is fair, and if not, what would you propose?

Hi Rob,
You didn\'t say where you lived but I assume in one of our towns and you are talking about the grass strips alongside the footpaths. As you will be aware there are a lot of them around the streets and council relies on the goodwill of residents to mow them to keep the streets tidy. We could of course extend the councils mowing service to include those areas but it would be at a cost to ratepayers and I suspect most would not want that. I have an arrangement with my neighbour and mow the strips alternately but the disposal of the grass is another issue.
Council could offer free bags for the disposal but it would be a nightmare to operate as some people would want to dispose of their own clippings etc in the bags and how you would police that I do not know. Again I would suspect it would just result in increased charges to ratepayers. Unfortunately there is no such thing as a free lunch or free service either.
Anyway Rob it sounds like you have been a good citizen doing the mowing and disposal yourself and probably for many years so thanks on behalf of Council
Regards................Neil Cruickshank WDC Councillor (Who hopes to still be after the election!)
