- Safer Walking and Cycling;
I want to see the WDC walking and cycling plan implemented to make it safer, more pleasant and more affordable to get around town. This involves the development of off-road trails, new and better footpaths (especially on bridges) and traffic calming. - Harbour Water Quality;
The people of Whangarei have given a strong mandate to the WDC to stop sewage overflows into the harbour. This needs to be prioritised over less urgent projects. I have a vision for our harbour to be swimmable and safe for collecting shellfish and fishing year round. - Televised Council Meetings;
Democracy works best when citizens are well informed. I propose to make council processes and decisions accessible by televising and webcasting council meetings. We can be on the forefront of open and accessible decision making and strengthen our local democracy. - Lower Hatea Crossing Affordability;
This $34m dollar project is unnecessary and unnaffordable at a time when council debt has increased past $130m. I propose to scrap this project in favour of safety improvements along riverside drive and a reduction in debt which will help keep rates down. - No GST on rates;
Currently council collects GST on rates and charges, including water. This is effectively a tax on top of a tax. With GST to rise to 15% on October 1st, rates will need to rise by more than 2%. I am willing to take up this cause and network with other councils to boycott this tax. Removal of GST from Council rates means lower rates across the board and contributes to a more equitable tax system.

- CBD development and linkage of major shopping areas:
We need to encourage growth and development in the CBD rather than allowing yet more satellite shopping areas to open. This process will take longer than three years however the groundwork can be completed now. - Sewer system:
Sort out the sewer system once and for all. The pollution of our harbour is a major issue that should be given priority. Rather than a 'quick fix' we need to ensure there is the capacity to accommodate future growth of the city so the problem doesn't resurface every few years. - Contracts to local businesses and contractors:
As a district we need to offer contracts to local businesses and contractors. Local money should stay local if possible. - Thinking long term:
Make sure all new buildings and infrastructure are built with enough redundancy and foresight so they will be useful in 20 years plus. This may cost more in the short term but long term it's more cost efficient. - Encourage tourism:
Make Whangarei a 'must stop' for any tourist heading north.
- Honestly Represent the people in our district with transparency & accountability without fear, favour or bias.
- Promote essential project affordability and reduced debt, which will keep rates to a satisfactory level.
- Encourage dialogue and involvement with our diverse community which will result in better decision making.
- Instigate changes to protect our harbour and waterways to save them pollution.
- Observe the social, economic, environmental and cultural well-being of the community in all decision making processes.
- Protection of jobs and economic devlopment. With the recession really starting ot bite there is a danger of further significant job losses in the nect 3 years. We must do what we can to encourage investment in new jobs in our district.
- Harbour protection. We must continue upgrading our sewerage net work to minimise infiltration into the harbour . We must also work on the background contamination which contributes as much pollution to our waterways.
- Affordability of council services. We have trimmed a lot of fat out of the operational budget in Whangarei District and we must continue doing so to make sure that a return is given on every dollar spent. we must maintain rate rises to no more than inflation.
- Restriction of debt levels. We have capped debt and must keep within that budget to minimise unproductive interest apyments.
- Long term planning and district plan review. We have made great steps in improving our plans over the last few years and must continue to provide a clear path for future development affordably.
