- Wellington needs to maintain an affordable, progressive and sustainable economy – I will actively promote this by:
Supporting emergent high growth businesses (particularly export oriented business).
Encouraging energy efficiency both within Council and in policy development.
Supporting reasoned rate reviews. - Working with Communities to address local issues including:
Graffiti, litter and an improved recycling programme.
Safety and emergency management preparedness.
Reliable public transport.
Pest control and beautification in our parks. - Implementation of policies that were adopted over the past three years including:
Community Facilities Policy which supports the redevelopment of the Johnsonville Library and Pool, development of Community Facilities in Churton Park and maintenance of existing facilities.
Johnsonville and Newlands Town Centre Plans which supports strengthening both centres, improving the public transport hub, traffic flows and safety.
Northern Reserves Plan, improving and extending the track networks throughout the north in particular in areas identified as future reserve in Churton Park / Stebbings Valley. - The future governance of the city must be carefully evaluated, promoting collaboration, community spirit and local decision making.
- Town Centre Planning in Tawa, there are a number of empty buildings, some for sale and others awaiting re-development! This is an opportunity for the community to shape the future of this area. Council plans to undertake a town centre planning process similar to Johnsonville and Newlands in 2012, I believe this will be too late, we must capitalize on the opportunities that are before us today. I will be doing everything I can to ensure this opportunity is not missed.
For more information on any of these issues please check out www.ngairebest.co.nz .
- AFFORDABLE RATES – Keeping home ownership affordable by managing the cost of rates through tighter Council spending on non-core activities and non-essential funding.
- SENSIBLE URBAN & SUBURBAN PLANNING – Tighter control over subdivisions and infill housing rules. Reduce high density housing building consents in low density areas. Ensure Northern Ward housing development plans, traffic flows and inner city access are sensible and well managed. Ensure that Council decisions on commercial developments across the wards are impartial and fair, especially the development of the Johnsonville Mall. Ensure that city planning includes adequate, well maintained open public spaces for recreational use.
- COMMUNITY SAFETY – Identify and address through Council policies any negative social consequences affecting the safety of city and Northern Ward residents and visitors.
- AGED AND DISABLED – Ensure that Council decisions made on traffic access to the inner city, are not detrimental to the enjoyment of those with mobility and access issues. Ensure adequate public facilities and easy access to council services for the elderly and the disabled.
- CCDHB HEALTH SERVICES - ensure quality and timely healthcare to all patients regardless of age, gender or ethnicity. Identify and reduce process inefficiencies to maintain financial viability.
- GIVE THE NORTHERN SUBURBS ITS HEART
The Northern suburbs offer safe, family-friendly communities with a focus on lifestyle and being close to nature. While the communities are strong, additional amenities are required to provide a central heart for each. My aim is to help each individual suburb via the following:
Supporting the redevelopment of Johnsoville Mall. Johnsonville retailers and residents urgently want the upgrade, I support this.
The continued support of and investment in Tawa and Newlands Shopping Centres, including better parking, kerbside planting and lighting. These areas should be thriving focal points for the Northern Ward.
Improved pedestrian and cycling links from Wellington CBD to the Northern Ward, enabling school children and commuters safer travel.
The ongoing support of the Tawa Community Board and its activities.
Help create a community heart in Churton Park by supporting the community centre and additional local amenities.
Support the preservation of Glenside, Ohariu and Horokiwi's community's unique enironmental heritage.
Supporting the further development of Paparangi and Grenada Village into thriving communities. - TRANSPORT & INFRASTRUCTURE
My aims are to:
Increase international connectivity by supporting the expansion of Wellington Airport's runways and buildings.
Support the urgent implementation of the Ngauranga Gorge to the Airport corridor and improve existing public transport links to and from the Airport.
Investigate the potential for a central city bus depot and a ferry terminal that integrates with public transport.
Improve cycling lanes.
Upgrade service lanes to create pedestrian friendly and ambient inner city spaces. - MAINTAIN WELLINGTON AS THE CULTURAL HEARTBEAT OF NEW ZEALAND
I will:
Investigate the development of a world class concert arena on the Wellington waterfront.
Encourage outdoor dining at cafes and restaurants.
Support significant events such as the Wellington Sevens, International Arts Festival and the Cuba St Carnival to ensure Wellington remains New Zealand's cultural and events capital.
Support additional sculptures, particularly those with a focus on water and wind. - KEEPING WELLINGTON GREEN
Help me to:
Implement the Green Streets programme, a community driven initiative to encourage street plantings.
Encourage sustainable energy that is locally produced including wind and tidal sources
Canvass residents and businesses for ideas to make Wellington one of the greenest cities in the world. - SPORT & RECREATION
Sport and Recreation
Promote new artificial pitches for use by rugby, football and rugby league to lessen the strain on Wellington's grass pitches.
Refurbish existing waterfront sports facilities for community and business use.

- BUSINESS INCENTIVES & RETAIL GROWTH:
The recent economic downturn is making times tough for all of us. We have seen many businesses downsizing, closing and restructuring to weather the financial storm. This has also caused unemployment rates to rise to levels we haven’t seen in years. In looking at the Northern Ward, and Wellington as a whole, I intend to examine any Council incentives currently in place with a view to encouraging business expansion and enticing new businesses into our area.
By offering incentives and enticements to businesses and retail shops, we can provide for the Northern Ward; support small businesses and allowing them an opportunity to develop and grow; and supply much needed job opportunities for the residents in Wellington and surrounding areas. - OUR YOUTH:
Like many of the residents of the Northern Ward, I have concerns regarding the youth of our community. Given the vital benefits to the future of our society as a whole, it is crucial that Council makes a commitment to support and encourage our youth, particularly teens, by providing them with programmes, locations and services that keep them healthy, active and engaged. There is strong evidence that indicates children who are active gain a stronger sense of who they are as a person. Research suggests that even small improvements in self concept can go a long way toward keeping children out of trouble and making them less vulnerable to engaging in problem behaviours.
I support the work of organisations like Challenge 2000 which provides life skills and activities to our youth and I am enthusiastically dedicated to seeing that the Wellington City Council leads the way in offering support to existing youth groups and providing activities and recreation for our young people. - RATES:
Whereas Wellington City Council currently has a rates relief programme aimed at lower income households; I intend to review that policy and to expand the relief to include a new and permanent reduced rates programme for our Senior Citizens as well.
I am passionate about supporting our Senior Citizens in the Northern Ward whom have worked and contributed to our society, are a wealth of wisdom and whom provide the roots and foundations of our community. As a Council, we need to encourage our retirees to remain in our area and provide resources and support to keep seniors close to home. - FREE LIBRARY SERVICES:
Communities build Libraries; Libraries build Communities. A public library should provide materials and services to help community residents obtain information which meets their personal, educational and professional needs.
The Wellington City Council provides the community with a public library system that receives an adequate operating budget; however, the library still continues to charge an abundance of extra fees to its users. By charging user fees for many of the services provided, the library discourages its use and impedes and hinders many residents from being able to fully access all the resources available and to fully enhance their personal growth for the benefit of all.
It is my mission to examine the library system to ensure funding is being used to its fullest advantage to the benefit of the residents of the Wellington region and the users of our libraries. In addition, searching for alternative funding in order to better utilise the budget available so that these outrageous and obstructive fees can be eliminated thereby providing a truly FREE library system accessible to ALL the citizens of Wellington and its suburbs. - OTHER ISSUES:
• High Density Housing:
The Council’s plans for in-fill housing and the removing of the rights of the local residents to decide their own environments in favour of high density buildings and dwellings would be detrimental to the Northern Ward. I feel this would be a “thin end of a wedge” and would have far-reaching negative consequences for all of the Northern Ward and the Wellington region as a whole. Consequently, I oppose the plan as it stands thus far and believe that those Councillors representing the Northern Ward should listen to the citizens and business owners who are directly affected by these plans and work on a growth strategy that will still preserve the rights and integrity of our own community.
• Liquor Ban:
I, like most Northern Ward residents, have concerns over the public liquor bans potentially pushing the undesirable elements into our Northern Ward; however, I also feel that blanket bans on alcohol penalise the sensible along with the rest. I am certain that other alternatives to an overall blanket ban should be explored so that our citizens can enjoy their leisure time, yet still resolve the problem issues and subsequent concerns that centre around a few offenders.
• Fitness:
To support and create facilities and areas which allow people of all fitness levels and physical abilities to be able to exercise and increase their fitness and would remain free to use for all residents.
. Ward Office:
As your City Councillor, I will establish an office in the Ward where I will be available to the communities and accessible to hear your concerns and requests of council.
