- The new Auckland Council needs to be fully accountable to its ratepayers.Greater concentration of power needs to be balanced by real transparency and meaningfulconsultation
- We need to honour our committment in Waitakere to the work we have done in establishing the Waitakere Ranges Heritage Bill. Our natural environment is one of our greatest treasures and its value for us and for the generations to come is unmeasurable.
- Significant community assets that are currently owned by Council need to stay owned by Council. This is especially true if they already generate major income.Flogging off assets for the sake of short term gain will only bring ratepayers hidden costs down the track.Water is a basic human right and must be provided to communities at minimum cost.It must not be privatised.
- Local initiatives should be supported where possible by Council.A move to greater centralised power should not necesarily go hand in hand with increased corporate control of all facets of our lives.Local business people can provide local service.
- A fair rating system open to public consultation,is needed to provide a broad range of services to the community. It is one thing to simply offer "the lowest possible rates" but what does this really mean to our quality of life?Who misses out?
