- Water
When I first heard that the government was going to scrap the democratically elected ECan and appoint commissioners to allocate water, I started a facebook group in opposition. From that, I became a key member of the Our Water, Our Vote group, and I have been instrumental in organising a number of the protests that have kept the pressure on the government and the story in the media. While the community board has no influence over ECan and what happens in the countryside, it is still important to consider the water issues that effect people within our community - especially those in the poorer areas of the ward. Improving the water quality of the Heathcote, the estuary, and other bodies of water - as well as maintaining a safe standard of drinking water - is something I am very passionate about. - Inner City
I am one of the proud but few inner city residents. The council has talked often of the important of having a vibrant inner city, yet has done little to stop the people and the businesses who provide that vibrance from radiating out into the suburbs and malls. I believe that the community board should be focussing on making the inner city not only a more attractive place to work, but a more attractive place to live as well. - Sustainable City
Instead of looking forward to the transport needs of the city in 2051, we have a council that rushes an extension of the tourist tram for 2011. - Economic development
- Transparency and Engagement
This current council has become increasingly removed from the people it is meant to represent - and consequently, the people it is meant to represent have become disengaged with the political process. A successful council and community board will be one that can engage with it’s constituents, and that can only happen when people feel like they do actually have a voice. While we can’t hope to please everyone with the decisions that are made, we can aim to make decisions and come to conclusions in a manner that can be clearly understood by all parties. This is why I feel that transparency and engagement are intimately linked, and both are integral parts of a successful local government.
- Communities - Community Boards were first established as the very forefront of local consultation and representation for our community to get a say in what was happening in it. I want to see the funding that has been stripped from community boards put back so we can keep our say in what happens in our community.
- Inner City - The heart of Christchurch is the central city, yet over the last term of council her heart has been allowed to wither away so the shops down her main streets are closed and vacant. People have moved out to the suburbs and we need to change this. We need to look at ways to revitalise the inner city, the heart of Christchurch.
- Living Streets - To keep the name of 'The Garden City' is more than just a central city park but the have her streets alive with green spaces and walkways. We need to keep the balance between urban needs for space and urban jungle of concrete. We want a city that looks like 'The Garden City' and not just named as such.
- Democracy - It seems a strange topic required to be talked about but the last term of council has seen a serious lack of openness, transparency and accountability that has gone unchecked for the most part and this must stop. We need a team from the Mayor through to the Councillors and Community Board Members that want to keep an open, transparent and accountable system in place for all residents to have easy access to.
- Transport - This is going to be a big issue in this election with the proposed changes to the current bus exchange and current public services. Does Christchurch go to light rail or review the current bus system and tweak were required. The next council will get to decide on this and it is a huge issue that will affect public transport users for years to come as well as the face of our city.
- The way council has lost touch with grass root community and their organisations. I want to be a strong voice at any council/community board table for the people who are the heart and soul of what makes this city tick
- The way high density low cost housing is springing up in the suburbs where we are losing the valuable land that allows for a family home with open green living spaces.
- Water and the need to ensure we continue to have clear and unobstructed access to the best fresh water available in the country.
- Roading to make sure our roads are managed in the best interest of all users with plenty of safe and user freindly cycleways for an increasing number of cyclists
- Making sure that any decsions I am required to make are in the best interest of the residents of Hagley/Ferrymead Ward who are ultimately reposible for my being elected I am bound to represent them to the best of my ability

- Residents the Priority
The Council is elected by us, the ratepayers, to provide the services and quality of community that we want. I want to see that the next Council works to that. The incoming Council must re-establish performance measures that are Resident-Opinion based.
It is important to me that the Christchurch City Council LISTENS to the communities (which is why I am standing for my local community board) and then it ACTS on that information and advice.
I want to see the residents of Christchurch return to living in a city truly served by a
Council that restores and enshrines the emphasis on:
• quality utilities
• the healthy and tidy environments
• a genuine and generous care of the
disadvantaged
• a fostering and enjoyment of the local
culture
• ... all the good things about living in
Christchurch that give us our community
pride ... that intrigue and attract others to
come here. - Accountable Spending
The Council is not a commercial corporation and should not attempt to run like one.
“Commercial and In Confidence” should be the Press-Headline exception rather than the rule.
There should be no discretionary room in the budget to buy up multi-million dollars worth of property and yet increase Council rents.
It must not be possible to spend millions of dollars on a flower show that residents then have to turn round and pay to get into, while cutting the free events.
We can not afford to provide Councillors with “discretionary funds” and Directors Fees while ticking off a programme of reducing community funding.
Function, fairness and efficiency must be the financial drivers. - Environment
The residents of Christchurch today are caretakers of the Christchurch for residents in the future. The legendary purity of our city’s drinking water must enshrined as a mandatory for now and years to come.
The Clean Air programme has been working well. I’d like to see a Council initiative aimed at sustaining it.
I’d like to see a count-down clock in Cathedral Square to the date when all sewage overflows into the waterways of Christchurch are closed and water discharged into the streams and estuary are “shellfish safe”.
Let’s measure the effect of our city’s parks and trees versus the city’s emissions and
set environment performance standards in line with that outcome?
And could we please have one, standard design and bright colour rubbish bin throughout the city – but especially beside bus shelters? - Responsibilities
There should be no Council involvement in any activity or expenditure not specifically directed at maintaining or improving the quality of life of the ratepayers of Christchurch.
Elected representatives are rarely exceptional business people or renowned experts in any particular field where Council-owned companies are concerned so having Councillors appointed to their Boards is ineffective. Each Company should have to present a report directly to Council on a regular basis.
Commercial events (Ellerslie and the Rugby World Cup) and event bidding should be run by the Canterbury Development Corporation and Christchurch & Canterbury Tourism as they are the council-funded specialists in economic development and attracting visitors. - Accessibility
The Christchurch City Council office/reception should be open from 8am to 6pm which is more in tune with ratepayers’ and residents’ working and availability hours.
Possibly Saturday morning as well?
- That the fundamental concept of the "Guaranteed Basic Income" be officially endorsed. That is, that all persons' well-being is paramount and must no longer be used as pawns for large companies' (corporations') profit!
- To have individual personal sovereignty recognized and acknowledged as the basic fundamental unit of the public and our society. That is; companies and corporations, etc. must serve the public and society, not the other way round (as it is at present)! A person must no longer be legally a company (as s/he is at present)!
- To have all official computers use Linux as the operating system - to be open source (representing the people) rather than by a private company!
- From the above, to endorse the most important issue of all; the happiness of all people and their right to pursue happiness in their infinitely unique way - ultimately, it will be for the greater good of all.
- To endorse and foster and encourage diversity, which is equal to vitality. That is to have our society run by the strongest, rather than by the weakest, as it is at present!
To strive for the greatest vision (not the lowest common denominator!)!
- Keep rates reasonable.
- Strong community.
- Greater commuting options.

- Regional water quality - create economic and just alternative land use - no chlorine or fluoride added without good science and community consultation. Base the prosperity of Christchurch on a sound eco-city direction, and revitalise local business around this theme.
Central city recovery through an holistic transport, parking and walking plan, etc.
Invest effort to save our farmland. * - * Sustainable transport - it makes no sense and is emissions-costly, to trade water-intensive milk dehydrated by coal-burning, for imported oil, when we can grow both healthy food and fuel crops - close this energy trading loop to the benefit of all and the environment. Establish new trade in added value for less roading pressure from commodity freight. Untangle mixed transport modes for efficiency and safety (bus exchanges & lanes, cycleways etc).
- * A safe city - agriculture and industry training and employment for youth - head off unemployment, substance abuse and crime. Plan for regional growth through technical integration of migrant skills; innovate sustainable and obtainable housing. Support schools and communities to make a better future for our families and children. Prosperity for all.
- * A clean city - keep litter and pollutants off streets and out of parks and rivers. Educate + make cost of proper waste management less prohibitive. Complete the sewerage overflow upgrades, asap.
- * Democracy on Council - build a functional & purposive team to improve Christchurch & Canterbury inclusively. Start with gender equity: promote the election of a female councillor into the position of Deputy-Mayor, to carry out the public duties of the mayoress. Transparency & accountability: governance to balance the corporate executive and make it responsive to the public who fund it. Stop excessive salary inflation. Eliminate big ticket project waste and restrain rates. Promote proportional representation STV for expression of cultural diversity, and efficient direct democracy by forums, polls and online referenda etc - prepare for democratic future.
