electing 2 Councillors

  1. The people know what is needed in their community, public voice is essential in decision making. Public submissions are very low per capita in Christchurch, this shows the councils inability to engage with the community.
  2. We need to protect our water supply. It is OUR greatest asset and it is under threat. We need to act as a community and we need to use our voice to tell the government how important an issue this is for us. We need unbiased scientific data free from media or political opinion so we can act to preserve our water supply and rivers. I want it to be there in the future.
  3. Safety is paramount, that our shopping centres, footpaths, parks and beaches are without hazard, clean and well maintained.
  4. Prudent investment in our services and amenities. There is a need to encourage foot traffic to our local shopping centres so we can revitalize the hearts of our communities and return the buzz we used to have when local shopping was a pleasure.
  5. Good general stewardship of our assets, incomes and expenses Christchurch’s ability to achieve fair rates is dependent upon low debt levels, and avoiding reckless spending. We also need to invest in our future wellbeing; we should not trade-off long term needs for short term gains.
  1. Strong, resilient communities.

With the recent earthquake it has been shown that Christchurch has strong, resilient communities. There have been many heart-warming stories of neighbours helping neighbours. These neighbourhood groups are the foundation stones on which our City is built. It is important that these groups are supported and increased in number.
  2. Council and Community.

I believe that Our Council needs to be well connected to Our Community. The Council needs to ensure that it hears the issues affecting the community and also ensures that the community is aware and understands the decisions being made by the Council. Our City has a good network of residents groups and if elected I will attend as many of these groups as possible and also make myself available to local residents.

  3. Rates.

It is important that we all contribute to the rates that help to run our City - the libraries, Art Gallery, water, collection of rubbish etc. however it is important that we use the rate take wisely. I believe that we should provide support to community groups who have a proven record of assistance to our communities.
  4. Drinking Water.

Christchurch is fortunate to have one of the best drinking water supplies in New Zealand. I believe that we should not be putting additives in our water - especially fluoride. As parents and caregivers it is our responsibility to teach our children how to wash their faces, brush their hair, cover their sneezes and clean their teeth properly. The use of Fluoride to improve dental health should remain a personal choice.

  1. A paramount issue for Christchurch is Vision, which may be understood as 'A preferred future,' (Stephen Covey)
The future for Christchurch that the People's Choice 2021envisions looks like this:
"We want it to be a great place to live, work and play, where all its citizens feel they belong. A safe city, free from the fear of crime."

For The People's Choice 2021, the following four issues have become critical for the city:
  2. Running the city in the people's interest
  3. Protecting our precious water

    Is it right?
that we should lose our clean drinking water?
that we should lose the ability to swim and fish in our rivers?
that we should lose our vote on these issues?

My Coast to Coast participation has added to my thinking on water - whether it's about the threat of Didymo, a low water threat at Woodstock from CPW water take or rubbish in grade 1 (still) water such as the Avon - chairs, tyres, oil.
  4. Ending extravagance and
    reckless borrowing
  5. Developing an open, democratic Council

For The People's Choice 2021, Greater fiscal responsibility, transparency and priority for people will be the hallmarks of the next Council.

  1. Politicians doing what they want instead of what you want. Tell me what you want http://www.supermayor.co.nz
  2. Lack of Common Sense Decision Making
  3. Lack of Accountability in everything
  4. Auckland's Horrendous Traffic Systems, and Crime rates.

Christchurch: Rebuilding it better than it was in the Burwood Pegasus Electorate.
  5. Auckland unable to put a tent on a wharf, build a waterfront stadium, hold a street race, run a successful event and to that matter do anything right under the current crop of useless politicians.

Christchurch: Full transparency for locals, not back room decisions by scumbag political parties.
  1. The people know what is needed in their community, the connection between community and council needs to be seamless. It is about giving the grassrootsof the community the opportunity and the tools to greater and more informed access to council and how decisions are made. Being approachable
  2. Ensuring that the core business of the council is taken care of and strengthened, as with the recent disaster, without the"taken for granted amenities" such as water, electricity and sewerage we are left as a city ,in a very vunerable position.
  3. We need to build a self reliant community, by supporting local businesses and bringing pride to the area that we are a part of. Building stronger communities will result in a strong and vibrant city that we can all proud of
  4. Transparency and accountibility, ensuring the decisions that are made at the council table are a fair representation of what the communities and city want.
  5. The redevelopment of our inner city infrastructure to future proof what will be built.
Sustainability and development need to go hand in hand.
  1. Regional water quality - create economic and just alternative land use - no chlorine or fluoride added without good science and community consultation. Base the prosperity of Christchurch on a sound eco-city direction, and revitalise local business around this theme.
Central city recovery through an holistic transport, parking and walking plan, etc.
Invest effort to save our farmland. *
  2. * Sustainable transport - it makes no sense and is emissions-costly, to trade water-intensive milk dehydrated by coal-burning, for imported oil, when we can grow both healthy food and fuel crops - close this energy trading loop to the benefit of all and the environment. Establish new trade in added value for less roading pressure from commodity freight. Untangle mixed transport modes for efficiency and safety (bus exchanges & lanes, cycleways etc).
  3. * A safe city - agriculture and industry training and employment for youth - head off unemployment, substance abuse and crime. Plan for regional growth through technical integration of migrant skills; innovate sustainable and obtainable housing. Support schools and communities to make a better future for our families and children. Prosperity for all.
  4. * A clean city - keep litter and pollutants off streets and out of parks and rivers. Educate + make cost of proper waste management less prohibitive. Complete the sewerage overflow upgrades, asap.
  5. * Democracy on Council - build a functional & purposive team to improve Christchurch & Canterbury inclusively. Start with gender equity: promote the election of a female councillor into the position of Deputy-Mayor, to carry out the public duties of the mayoress. Transparency & accountability: governance to balance the corporate executive and make it responsive to the public who fund it. Stop excessive salary inflation. Eliminate big ticket project waste and restrain rates. Promote proportional representation STV for expression of cultural diversity, and efficient direct democracy by forums, polls and online referenda etc - prepare for democratic future.
  1. Open decision making with real community consultation
    - no more decisions behind behind closed doors
    - re-establish standing committees
    - have better ways of consulting with the community and hearing community views
  2. Public and active transport
    - re-instate budget for suburban interchanges
    - make faster progress on bus lanes
    - complete the cycle network, especially provoding cycle facilities at intersections
    - improve footpaths and lighting for pedestrian saftey
  3. Protecting Christchurch's drinking water:
    - change the City Plan to restrict further development over the unconfined aquifers
    - Have research undertaken on the effect of lowered flows in the Waimakariri River on aquifers and spring fed rivers, so that we can be certain that further takes from the river do not impact on the Christchurch water supply.
    - Encourage water conservation
    - Ensure meters are read annually and household water usage is fed back to all residents.
    - Implement an incentive scheme to encourage residents to install rainwater tanks for garden irrigation and encourage new houses to have a rainwater system or a combination rainwater-grey water system - captured water can be used for lower quality water uses such as toilet flushing or garden irrigation.
    - Support the continued management of the City’s water supply by the Council as a core Council service and oppose its contracting out of this to the private sector.
  4. Manage the sand dunes and coast for protection from storms, tsunamis and sea level rise
    - retain sand duns and increase the vegetation on the dunes
    - install a siren system to advise coastal residents when a tsunami warning is in place
