- Ensure critical assets like Ports of Auckland are well managed and remain in public hands
- Ensure the Super City is accountable to Aucklanders
- Ensure Super City costs do not blow out and rates are controlled
- Within the densely populated Waitemata Ward it's important to ensure that our streetscapes and public open spaces are as attractive, friendly and safe as possible. Our parks provide a refuge from inner city living and as the lungs of our city they need care and enhancement. Receation and sports facilities are a top priority - as they make a major contribution to visitor numbers, and to health and welfare.
- Poor housing also impacts on health and welfare. The city must do everything to improve housing standards and affordability. This starts with planning to prevent the development of shoebox sized apartments, to assistance with insulation programmes, to working with the government to fund or subsidise the building of new houses and apartments.
- The business of Auckland is business. The city must support business development, make the city tourist-friendly, promote its attributes and attractions, and support local business associations. It must work with transport agencies to ensure public transport is favoured, and the emphasis in city scapes is to make shopping precincts more friendly for people.
- The preservation of heritage aspects that provide so much of the character and charm of older Auckland is vital. Planning regulations that provide bonuses for retention rather than destruction should be used as a tool to make spaces that are appealing, yet fully functional.
- Great restaurants, bars and cafes bring fun and life to a city - but there's a time and place for everything. The city can contribute to the control of binge drinking and the abuse of alcohol by banning consumption in city streets This should impact on crime, safety, driving offences, noise and litter especially broken glass.
- Transport:
We need a visionary and courageous plan that gets Auckland moving, the funding for which can be achieved through better co-ordination with central Government and the raising of a public infrastructure fund. - Waterfront:
I will champion the waterfront development and believe we have an opportunity to get this right - and in so doing – leave a legacy of pride and mana for generations to come. - Rates:
I will apply my extensive experience in business mergers to work vigilantly to keeping rates capped as Auckland’s seven administrative bodies are merged into one. We must extract the savings to the benefit to ratepayers. - Crime:
I need your vote to lead Council into a closer Partnership with Police and breathe life into ‘Safer Communities Together’ - Young and Old
As a parent, I want to leave our City in the best possible shape for the next generation and ask you to join me by supporting an initiative that enables teenagers and elders to work together in their local communities.
- WATERFRONT
The refusal of the Ports to release land for public access on our waterfront is legendary. Nowhere more so than in the Waitemata and Gulf Ward is the choice so stark. You have a choice between the guardian of the current Port’s expansionist plans for more port’s reclamation and containers, or elect me – a long standing champion for a new, high value tourism economy based on our waterfront. - SUPER CITY
There will be nothing super about this city if it is not based around super communities. Empowering local boards through increased responsibility and substantial funding moves local government closer to you, so that you can more easily play a part in the direction of our community and our city. I call it ‘glocal’ - global solutions delivered locally. When we believe in our community and the direction of our city we all become engaged and develop a pride and a sense of belief in where we live. This is the modern governance model I am committed to. - TRANSPORT
Roading will always be a vital component in our transport mix but it is past time that we started to even up the transport ledger by building transport infrastructure such as the central city rail loop and accelerating the ease of public transport use by advancing integrated public transport ticketing. At the same time let’s remember that transport is a servant of place. We need to turn up the dial on building great places too. If we fail to make these changes, we will be left behind by those modern cities that have made these choices. - HERITAGE
This is where our city started but we have been poor guardians of our heritage. There is no place better to tell Auckland's story than by celebrating our heritage. Today I am drawing a line in the sand and standing up for our natural and built heritage by championing a suite of reforms that substantially recognises the value of our heritage in the way that we plan our city. - WATER
As far as this supercity transition goes, it will be neither practical nor fair to have large sudden changes in rates and water charges, especially if it involves a sudden shift in burden from the wealthy to the poor. Those sorts of issues have to be carefully considered at any time, but with things being tight for households this year and over the next few years there should be no big changes for the majority of Aucklanders during the first term on the new Auckland Council.
- All nominees will tell you the same thing: Transport, Rates, Public Spaces, Waterfront, Amenities, Wastewater, Leaky homes etc etc. Although I believe these to be relevant, I will not be joining the clones in adopting these generic policies. The main issue I will be tackling is the lack of fun in our city, great cities around the world have a vibe and a culture that defines them and makes them special. Auckland does not have this. I will be focussing all my attention on helping to create a more exciting, more inclusive city with a world class culture. Jedi’s believe in one force that binds us all, I want to bring this philosophy to Aucklanders.
