- Keeping rates down
I plan to be vigilant and constantly looking for ways to keep rates from rising. One example is the idea of having 3 separate offices and staff for the 3 boards. We have a perfectly placed building with all the information in one place in Henderson.Save money and use it. - Public Transport
I want it to be efficient, affordable and reachable for all in the areas we have it, without causing rate increases. - Environment
The Waitakere Ranges Local Board covers a diverse area and types of usage. We have large pockets of urban area, rural,The Ranges/Parks and the beaches/coastline. Each area has its own specific environmental issues but as a board we need to work hard to keep them all in harmony and balance. Affordable rubbish disposal would go a long way to stop dumping in the ranges. - Property owners concerns.
If changes are needed in an area, or a zone change is going to adversely effect land owners, then they need to be made aware and asked for input to get the best outcome. For example when land is needed for a road a land owner is compensated at market value. So if a piece of land is needed to add to Centennial Park or a zone change to help the park for example, then the same should apply. - Liaison on crime management
Crime is a concern for all of us in our daily lives.
I have had a lot of experience in the emergency service operations and worked extensively with the Police.
I will continue to do this to make sure we have the best crime management we can for our area.

- The new Auckland Council needs to be fully accountable to its ratepayers.Greater concentration of power needs to be balanced by real transparency and meaningfulconsultation
- We need to honour our committment in Waitakere to the work we have done in establishing the Waitakere Ranges Heritage Bill. Our natural environment is one of our greatest treasures and its value for us and for the generations to come is unmeasurable.
- Significant community assets that are currently owned by Council need to stay owned by Council. This is especially true if they already generate major income.Flogging off assets for the sake of short term gain will only bring ratepayers hidden costs down the track.Water is a basic human right and must be provided to communities at minimum cost.It must not be privatised.
- Local initiatives should be supported where possible by Council.A move to greater centralised power should not necesarily go hand in hand with increased corporate control of all facets of our lives.Local business people can provide local service.
- A fair rating system open to public consultation,is needed to provide a broad range of services to the community. It is one thing to simply offer "the lowest possible rates" but what does this really mean to our quality of life?Who misses out?
- Community:
Strengthening and protecting our vibrant communities in the Ranges. Ensuring communities support one another and take responsibility for local issues in a proactive and positive manner. - Leadership:
Leading positively and effectively, supporting and encouraging community groups, business, schools and individuals to achieve their aspirations and potential. - Affordability:
Creating an affordable region to live and work in. Delivering value for money across all public services, project and assets under Local Board management. - Prosperity:
Welcoming and championing progress to a world-class Auckland.
I will help create an encouraging and welcoming environment for entrepreneurs and innovators backed by infrastructure and regulations that enhance growth and opportunity. I will be part of a new Auckland Council which champions a culture that helps people get things done. I will embrace partnerships with the private and not-for-profit sectors to build and grow our community assets. I will help ensure the Waitakere Ranges becomes a welcoming events and tourist destination that benefits our local economy. If you live out West you have a right to make a living out West! I will work tirelessly to ensure we create improved local employment opportunities. - Transport:
Making it easier to get around. Improved planning, infrastructure and public transport all have a part to play here to getting Auckland moving again. This will be one of the major challenges as Auckland population continues to grow.
- Stopping the upwards trend of rates rises.
We get many services for our rates and Waitakere has in recent years used rates dollars wisely for long overdue improvements. But the trend year after year cannot continue. We need more effective partnerships with central government, especially for health, transport, housing and education. - Healthy and educated cities with improved urban design for sustainable healthy housing.
Local health services - full 24 hours emergency services at the local hospital and continuing extension of full services. This includes stronger health education to combat social diseases such as alcoholism and smoking. - Sustaining our communities. Waitakere has led the way in preserving our environment and initiating community projects that have social benefits that should not be underestimated for their impacts on lives now and for the future. It's well proven that people involved in their communities are healthier. They are better at advocating for hospitals and local health services.
- Health and community facilities. The Waitakere Local Board area is large and some of it sparsely populated. Safe roads, paths and public transport are expensive but essential. An involved community will advocate for public places (parks, halls, libraries, sports and performance places) and the Local Board must lead that involvement.
- Fair local government. Bureaucracy must not get in the way of enterprise and progress. Local government must balance responsibilities of preservation and protection with supporting economic development for jobs and housing and a healthier population.

- 1. Town Centre Improvements.
I wish to ensure that our town centres are an attractive place where the community can feel safe and proud of the facilities - sometimes its as simple as removing graffiti and making shop windows look more appealing. I wish to see the Glen Eden Town Centre concept plan implemented.
To ensure the upgrade on Lopdell House is completed as soon a possible. - 2. Anti Graffiti.
I will actively promote Zero Tolerance on graffiti. I will support the continued funding of the "Tag Out Trust" whilst encouraging community buy in.
At the end of the day, we as a community, need to take ownership of this problem and work together. - 3. Transport & Communication.
I will advocate for effective rail service intergrated with local feeder bus services to rail stations. I recognise a large part of our ward is rural and therefore see the benefit of increased secure and safe Park & Ride facilities to meet the demand.
I recognise there is a need for improved disabled access to the Glen Eden Railway Station ie: Ramps removed - replaced with Lifts similar to Swanson.
I actively support integrated off road cycleways. It would be sensible to locate the cycleways parallel to the Auckland Rail Corridor.
I would like to see the continuation of the safe rural walkways and footpath projects. Advocate to government a further reduction in Rural speed limits from the current bylaws.
To continue to advocate for rural high -speed Broadband. - 4. Environment.
I am passionate about the environment and recognise the need to protect the Waitakere Ranges. I also recognise landowners rights and concerns. The Local Board needs to ensure the correct balance.
Keep our beaches and streams clean
by continuing "Project Twin Streams". - 5. Tourism.
To make Auckland a world class tourist destination.
The Waitakeres Ranges are the backdrop of Auckland City and offers huge tourism potential. The local board needs to be mindful of the financial benefits tourism brings.
By promoting tourism, economic growth is stimulated. This could be as simple as encouraging and promoting small local industries.
We need to ensure the film industry is also encouraged to utilise our iconic landscape.
- Affordability of rates and services.
- Stong positive and effective leadership.
- Transport - making it easier to get around.
- Environment - preserving and enhancing the region's environment.
- Community - strengthening and protecting local communities.
- Community:
Your community should be strengthened and protected.
I can help you there. - Leadership:
You deserve positive and effective leadership.
I can help you there. - Affordability:
Your region should be affordable for you to live and work in.
I can help you there. - Transport:
It needs to be easier for you to get around.
I can help you there. - Environment:
Waitakere's people and places need protecting.
I can help you there.
- Transport. We have a poorly designed transport system and are too reliant on cars. With the price of gas likely to spike in the next few years and availability becoming more and more difficult we need to redesign our transport system to one that is less reliant on oil. Public transport is a must and I wholeheartedly support the Queen Street tunnel. We also need to promote other alternatives such as telework and walking school busses.
- Waitakere Ranges Protection. The ranges are our taonga and make Waitakere special. But as Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment Morgan Williams said they will suffer death by a thousand cuts unless a baseline is established and protected. The metropolitan urban limit should stay where it is and I oppose Council's attempts to loosen up subdivision restrictions in the Henderson Valley.
- Complexity. Council is just too complex to deal with. Admittedly some issues cannot be simplified but my experience is that documents and strategies are too long, too prolix and their meaning is unclear. If elected I will promote the use of plain english and emphasise the desirability of brevity.
- Costs. Rates are high. Good planning and good infrastructure are expensive but rates have been increasing by more than the rate of inflation for many years. If elected to the Board I will not have any power over the setting of the city's budgets but I will advocate for the reduction of expenses which cannot be justified.
- Support for the arts. Waitakere and in particular Titirangi is blessed with a vibrant arts sector. I will continue to fully support it. I support wholeheartedly the Lopdell House project, a project that I have been involved in since its inception.
- Politics of the Super-City:
Building an effective Local Board that builds local democracy and capacity ensuring an effective working relationship with the 'Super-City' council including accountability back to the Community. - Community assets:
Making sure community assets that provide essential services or generate major income are retained in Council ownership and control. Importantly, that includes water services. - Environment:
Protecting the Waitakere Ranges, wilderness and coast from commercial exploitation and over development. Continuing the vision of the Eco-City by caring for our environment, reducing land, air and water pollution. - Fair Rates
Fair rates that are not adding further economic hardship to rate-payers on super city projects of little value to the west, or rates siphoned off for ‘white elephants’. With my Future West colleagues we will vigorously oppose waste water charges that can add hundreds of dollars of costs to you every year. - Sustainable Community Development
Working for vibrant and healthy communities and neighbourhoods both socially and economically, where families and citizens feel valued and safe. This includes real engagement with community groups, service providers, churches, the arts and sport.

- Keeping the Local in Local Government:
No local body politician can expect to know all there is to know about everything and especially about the views and aspirations of local communities and groups.
That is why I will want to have conversations with individuals and community groups before the Local Board discusses any matter at all that will impact n the community.
I want the range of individuals and groups to be as wide as possible so that I hear all the ideas, all the views, and all the suggestions that people will have. I will listen to the R and R groups, but also to school boards, sports clubs, churches, play centre groups, whoever, and especially to groups of young people.
I will also feed back to those individuals and groups so you will know what happened to your ideas, requests and comments.
Waitakere has always been a place where partnerships between community and council have enabled good input and good output for mutual benefits. Grants, contracts and joint activities have helped build a cohesive community. I want that to continue between you and the Local Board.
It is very obvious when I talk to people from other parts of the country, that this is not always the case outside of Waitakere, and the difference in the community is very obvious.
Let's keep it going our way, as the new arrangements come into effect. - The environment and conservation are my passions.
I am the chairperson of the Auckland Conservation Board, and have been on the Board for 8 years now. The Board operates as a team so that whoever has the knowledge and experience on a particular issue leads the debate, and is responsible for driving the action - be it conversations with the community, letter writing , formal submission, education etc.
I would want the Waitakere Ranges Local Board to operate in this way too.
I have a number ideas about how we should manage environmental issues in the future.
I would support moves to have small local or individual power generation schemes - solar panels, small wind turbines, mini hydro stations etc.
I would support management of waste water in small community treatment stations rather than pumping sewage across the city to Mangere.
I would encourage and incentivise recycling and re-use of water for non-drinking purposes. I would encourage the collection of rain water for non-drinking purposes too.
I would promote an incentivised process for people building new houses to incorporate sustainable features in their houses. And reward people who retro-fit their existing houses - installing insulation and other features like the ones I have mentioned above.
I would want to see green waste and food scraps composted. I would promote growing your own veges and keeping your own chooks.
I would expect to continue to support Ecomatters Environment Trust, Weedfree Waitakere and Keep Waitakere Beautiful. With the conspicuous outcomes that these groups have demonstrated, they have proved that every cent invested brings huge returns. If the hours of volunteer work the groups arrange were costed out, they would equal hundreds of thousands of dollars of work for the community and the environment.
Some of the activities of these groups have become icons such as Trees for Babies, Schools Trash to Fashion, Ecowise Awards, the Sustainable Living Centre and Ecoday. I would be a vigorous advocate for these projects to continue.
- Retaining local facilities such as parks, sports fields, libraries, and the Trusts' Stadium is vital. None of these should be for sale.
- Local jobs for local people and good public transport for those who have to travel out of the area should be a priority.
- To ensure sufficient resources are provides to maintain services and the lifestyle of communities in our area.
