  1. The formation of the new Auckland Council ( super city) means there is a need for strong
independent non affiliated people on the local boards, to represent local communities. These
elected people should be local residents.
  2. There is a need to ensure that there is meaningful
consultation on all major issues that affect local communities and this includes all major issues and projects associated with the Council Control Organisations.(CCO's )especially the Transport CCO.
  3. The requirement that the Council has to prepare a " spatial plan" will require the Local Board to protect and preserve those qualities and character of the local area especially the heritage and special values of our villages. This is particularly important with any policy or programme associated with accommodating additional growth.
  4. There is a need to ensure that there is sensible and prudent expenditure of public funds and that there is careful co-ordination of Council projects and work, to reduce undue over spending.
  5. Greater focus and expenditure should be provided to our iconic volcanic cones and that free public access should be preserved.

  1. We must keep our communities unified and strong. Development must be appropriate, sensitive to the existing built and natural environment, and not at the expense of residents. The City Vision team is opposed to the mega-McDonald's proposed for Balmoral. The Dominion Road project that C&R tried to ram through was flawed and was being rushed through without sufficient consultation.
  2. Public transport needs to be effective and affordable. More cars are not the solution to Auckland's traffic problems!
  3. We must protect and enhance our natural and built environment. We need to keep green space and protect Maungawhau-Mt Eden, One Tree Hill, Cornwall Park and Mount St John.
  4. The City Vision team is opposed to the privatisation of Auckland's infrastructure assets. They're ours, we paid for them, and we should keep them in our hands!
  5. We must ensure that local voices aren't drowned out by those of corporate interests and property developers in the new Super City structure. The first term of the new Auckland Council will be pivotal in establishing the role and responsibilities of local boards. We need local board members who are committed to keeping power in the local community and actively making local voices heard at all levels.
  1. To ensure our communities are safe. There must be zero tolerance for crime.
  2. We need real consultation on issues affecting our residential and business communities. There must be transparency in decision making. It will be very important to ensure that the Council Controlled Organisations consult with the Local Boards on issues affecting our residential and business communities
  3. To have sensible and effective transport solutions that meet the needs of the public.
  4. We must strive for the protection and enhancement of our business and residential communities by properly addressing isssues which at present allow the destruction of our communities.
  5. Ensuring that our money is spent wisely whilst at the same time ensuring rates are affordable.
  1. Greater consultation, particularly in the early stages of planning to allow communities greater and more meaningful input. Coupled with this I want to see greater transparency in decision making and in the process undertaken to arrive at decisions.
  2. Cleaner and safer neighbourhoods. Like many others I have been the victim of crime so security is a major concern to me. I want to see more done to make our streets safer, particularly for our children and elderly people.
  3. Ensure costs are controlled. Rates need to be affordable and spending decisions need to be sensible, appropriate and provide real value for the community.
  4. Improved public transport. Effective public transport is essential in our city but it is important to ensure it meets the needs of the public.
  5. Protect and enhance our communities by addressing issues which currently allow the destruction of our residential and business communities and provide greater protection for our parks, beaches, volcanic cones and urban waterways and reserves.
  1. Rates must be affordable and spend controlled. Councils are in place to provide services to the community not a profit centre or as an empire builder.
We need to protect the rights of the ratepayer.

  2. Public transport needs to be effective and affordable with greater vision for the future.
  3. Ensure that we keep the local voice well to the fore in the new Super City. We can't be railroaded by demands of inter city vanity and bullying.
  4. Retain the green spaces throughout Eden/Epsom and ensure that playing and sporting fields are always available for our youth.
  5. Eden/Epsom must have strong representation to protect its future and preserve its unique heritage from shortsighted decisions.

  1. Community: Strengthening and protecting our vibrant communities

We recognise the individual neighbourhoods and communities that combine as the fabric of the Auckland region.

Aucklanders need to feel safe in our Region. We will not tolerate anti-social behaviour on our streets and in our communities, and will advocate vigorously for effective policing.

We will encourage and support arts, sport and cultural activities across our Region. We will work collaboratively with community, cultural and sports groups to build the facilities that our neighbourhoods expect of a world-class city

Auckland’s multi-cultural communities are at the heart of our unique culture. We will strengthen our rich culture working with Maori and local Iwi, and also with Pasifika, other ethnic and community groups. We will promote and invest in programmes that celebrate the things we share and recognise our diversity - both of which make Auckland a great place to live.

  2. Leadership: Leading positively and effectively

With an experienced and capable team we will make our Region’s complex new arrangements work.

We will require full accountability from all Council Controlled Organisations (CCOs), and will expect them to deliver the best possible results for our communities.

We will enable communities to make decisions on local matters and will ensure that the Auckland Council and CCOs work constructively with Local Boards.

We are committed to working together as a team to provide the local and Auckland-wide governance and leadership our Region needs.
  3. Affordability: Creating an affordable region to live and work in

You know that living in Auckland can be expensive. We are determined to minimise the burden on households and businesses both urban and rural by extracting savings from the new, streamlined council arrangements.

We will channel investment into the essential infrastructure our region and local communities need. We will commit to keeping Auckland Council rates as low as possible without decreasing the core services that residents expect.

We will deliver you better value for money. We will keep Auckland Council spending under control by focusing on core local government activities and services. We will focus on essential Auckland Council services and not duplicate central government’s welfare functions locally.

Water and waste water costs will be kept to the minimum necessary to maintain a world class system.
  4. Prosperity: Welcoming progress to a world-class Auckland

We want a world-class, prosperous Auckland. We will create an encouraging and welcoming environment for entrepreneurs and innovators backed by infrastructure and regulations that enhance growth and opportunity.

We will create a new Auckland Council which champions a culture that helps people get things done.

Partnerships with the private and not-for-profit sectors to build and grow our community assets will be a core element.

We will foster the Auckland Region becoming a major events destination that benefits our local economy.
  5. Transport: Making it easier to get around

We will invest in transport options which enable more of us to move around more conveniently.

We will commit to essential public transport and roading infrastructure for people and goods. An effective single ticketing system for public transport will be implemented.

We will ensure that the new Auckland Transport agency works constructively with central government to complete the motorway network and major arterial routes across the Region.

We will ensure careful benefit cost consideration is undertaken before ratepayers’ money is invested in these major projects.

Environment: Preserving and enhancing the Auckland region’s environment
We are proud of our unique environment, with its combination of harbours and the gulf, volcanoes, parks, forests, as well as the architectural heritage across the Region and the special flavour of its rural hinterland.

In establishing a single vision and plan for the Auckland Region we will preserve and protect our environmental assets, while allowing individuals the freedom to enjoy and improve their urban and rural private property.

High quality design and planning will be encouraged together with the sensible management of growth and development.

We will advocate for stricter vehicle emissions standards to improve our Region’s air quality, and enhance the water quality in all our streams and harbours.

  1. No councillor credit cards

City Councillors don't need credit cards, and they have proven they can't be trusted with them. Proper expenses can be claimed in the normal way.

  2. Mt Eden summit - free and open access.

It is the right of every resident to be able to take in the great view from the top without having to pay for some kind of shuttle bus.
  3. Kids playgrounds to be exciting and challenging - even a bit risky!

Playgrounds have been dumbed down to become boring places where kids just can't be bothered going, so they end up stuck at home watching TV.
  4. Keep parking on Dominion Rd

This is vital for our main Road. Stop parking and you will kill the road.
  5. Zero rates rise.

Council needs to stop this crazy borrowing and live within our means.
This also means NOT selling our assets for short term gain.
  1. Mt Eden Prison

The new remand prison being constructed has exceeded the height restrictions originally proposed by 5 metres. This has impacted on schools in the vicinity, and particularly on some sports fields belonging to Auckland Grammar School. We will work hard to support initiatives that mitigate and/or compensate the affected parties wherever practicable. Strategically, we will also register with the Government our wish that in future, Government Agencies must consult locally and the most appropriate avenue will be through the Local Boards. This must be true consultation and not just advisory briefings as appears to have occurred in this case on 29-30 August, 2007.
  2. Strategic Focus/Spatial Plan

The new Councillors need to focus on developing coherent strategy for the region. For this to occur, they need to ensure careful, proper and thorough analysis of the issues at hand by the relevant parties. Only then can the options to resolve them in a considered manner be developed and articulated for appropriate consideration and consultation. The Local Boards will assist this process by providing relevant feedback to Councillors, including critiquing the analysis as it may apply locally. Therefore we need to ensure a collaborative team to work in a constructive and diligent manner.
  3. Business Precincts

Vibrant business and retail precincts add a great sense of well-being and vitality to our community. We are focused on working collaboratively to develop true partnerships that enable Council to improve the facilities and environments in which they operate to assist and grow the potential for their success. Examples include enhancing streetscapes and parking facilities and options.
  4. Safety

The recent tragedy in Canterbury has shown the strength of community leadership as well as its resolve in getting through a natural disaster, together. The new Local board can play its part in safeguarding and assisting our people should a disaster strike. With recent events foremost in our minds, we would wish to undertake a review of the impact and learnings from this natural disaster, and be involved with a review of the local Civil Defence plans. We want to review our local facilities that could be used in times of a natural disaster, and the resources available to support them. On a regular basis, we must also assist our enforcement agencies with their initiatives to prevent crime and general wilful property damage including graffiti. By working in true partnership with relevant parties, we believe the Local Board can contribute to making our residents feel safer and have their property respected.
  5. Balance

Making the role of the local board one of being actively involved with the community such that they have a voice which is effectively represented to Councillors and Mayoralty.

Balancing progressing Auckland with affordability for residents

Balancing progressing Auckland with protection of character of vibrant town centres and our unique natural landscapes

Aucklander’s having pride in their city and council because they feel heard and their city is affordable, safe, beautiful, progressive and fun.
