Electing 2 Councillors

  1. Accessible and Accountable

I will not be someone you see once every three years. I want to facilitate communication and encourage community input. Once a month on a rotational basis you will see me at a community hall near you holding a community clinic/open day where you will be welcome to air your concerns or just drop in for a chat.
I will support the web casting of Council meetings so you know what the Council is doing on your behalf and there is transparency and accountability.
  2. Connected Communities

Our greatest asset is our people. I want to invest in them. I will lobby for the capacity building, integration and inclusion of the diverse communities into the mainstream so that every member can feel empowered to actively contribute, volunteer and participate in the civic life of our multi-cultural city where no one is living in isolation or a state of disconnection.
  3. Cultural/Community Centre & Services Hub

What Albany lacks is a heart- a place where we can all come together to celebrate our unique identity and Albany brand. I will lobby to build a civic precinct with a town hall, a bigger library, a skate park, a basketball court and a services hub preferably close to the long awaited swimming pool. This precinct is my vision for Albany, it will be a part of the staged long term community plan which will bring together our youth, our families and our senior community members with very special facilities for our disabled members.
I will support and lobby for the development of similar hubs/villages across the Albany Ward so that local identity and character of communities is preserved and fostered.

  4. Affordability

I will lobby hard for the lowest possible rates especially on behalf of our senior community members on fixed incomes, struggling businesses and families who are over stretched in this tough economic climate. I will vote "no" for user pays for waste water charges.
  5. Transport

I will lobby to ease traffic congestion during peak rush hours so we are not forever sitting in traffic during school runs and woken up by couriers at ungodly hours so they can get in and out of Albany quickly. I will work to link the new subdivisions with public transport which runs more frequently and ensure the safety of mobility scooter users and cyclists on our roads. I will lobby for an easy to understand integrated ticketing system.

  1. Community: Strengthening and protecting our vibrant communities through local decision making.
Building clean, safe and secure neighbourhoods and providing quality facilities in the right places
  2. Affordability: Creating an affordable region to live and work in. Lowest possible rates and charges

  3. Prosperity: Welcoming progress to a world-class Auckland. Encouraging and fostering economic development opportunities to support new job growth.
  4. Transport: Making it easier to get around. Investing in effective public transport and critical road links
  5. Environment: Preserving and enhancing the Auckland region’s environment. Keeping our beaches and streams clean and maintaining our regional parks
  1. Delegate more to each Local Board, including decisions relating to rates. I am determined that local democracy will be enhanced as some of what has be taken away by means of the imposed legislation must be given back.
I support binding referenda provided that there is disclosed a 60% concensus
  2. Protect public assets especially the Ports of Auckland and water. I will strive to give elected members more control over CCOs, in order to preserve the public interest.
  3. Work hard to develop excellent and effective communication with with both Local Boards. I believe "knowledge empowers people when it is effectively communicated". I will use personal funds to ensure that this happens for high level regional matters and commit to voting on big issues according to the majority communal view
  4. Financial prudence is essential. The current debt burden per capita is far too high and rates must be restained. I will only vote for large ticket items if the benifit/cost ratio is positive.
Penlink has a BCR of 3+ and I will vote for it to be built in 2011.
  5. I will support funds being spent on improving public transpot efficiency especially that of buses. Again any proposal must have a high BCR rating. I am unsure that rail development will yeild sufficent public benefit as development costs will be high, patronage is likely to be modest. Having a good rail net in my mind is problematic because Aucklands population density is low and the terrain is challenging.

  1. Community - Strengthening and protecting our vibrant communities by promoting and investing in programmes that celebrate the things we share, recognize our diversity and make Auckland a great place to live.
  2. Affordability - Creating an affordable region to live and work in by keeping rates and charges as Low as possible.
  3. Prosperity - Welcoming progress to a world-class Auckland by encouraging and fostering economic growth and opportunity.
  4. Transport - Making it easier to get around by investing in effective public transport and critical road links.
  5. Environment - Preserving and enhancing our unique environment by keeping our beaches and streams clean and maintaining our regional parks.
  1. Representing our Albany Ward communities and curbing the politicisation of local government by standing as independants. Keeping the local in Local Government and not answering to a 'Political' machine. I promise you an absolute commitment to work full-time on your behalf and be accessible when you need me to listen, to investigate and to act.
  2. Privitisation of those assetts that have been paid for, over many generations. Really concerned in regards to the escalating price of water, services and more importantly the change to a capital value rating system that may rate people out of their properties.
  3. Intergrated ticketing for the region. Extending the Bus-way to Silverdale from Albany and promoting an extension of the same fare zone that exists (at Albany) to Silverdale. Advocating for a more efficient transport system that actually reduces congestion for motorists and offers a real transport alternative for communters.

  4. Continuing to promote development that is sustainable. Great designed that creates communities with heart or enhances existing communities.Opposing inappropriate development with little amenity and out of character with their local community.
  5. Opposing commercial flights to Whenuapai!

  1. Transportation issues
    - Support a third harbour crossing, preferably tunnel
    - Expansion of the bus station parking facility at the Albany park and ride
    - Extension of the busway to Orewa
  2. Protect the waters of the Upper Harbour from pollution and protect the coast line of the Bays and Hibiscus Coast.
  3. Ensure that new housing is supported by appropriate roading networks, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure and leisure facilities.
  4. Delivery of key planned local projects
-the long awaited northern community aquatic centre.
  5. Make sure the community’s needs are not forgotten in the new structure.
    - Involve local residents and groups in decision making.
  1. Protection of our villages, communities, beaches, parks and green belts is vital.
  2. Improve roading and increase public transport with better and more cost effective services and links.
  3. Attack graffiti. Get the culprits dealt with.
  4. GST on rates is a tax on a tax. This money should be in your pocket. No rate rise.
  5. Deal with dangerous dogs. There are to many innocent children being attacked. The law needs looking at.
  1. RATING;
Containing rates and the need for the new Council to spend money wisely. Commited to a city we can afford to live in

  2. COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT:
Ensuring the new local boards have full functions, powers and funding to service local communities at a local level
  3. SPATIAL PLAN:
Developing the required spatial plan or blueprint for how our region should develop in the future , in a way that has buy in from our many diverse communities and in a way that allows them to keep theiir unique sense of identity
  4. FOCUS ON THE ESSENTIALS:
Need to focus on the essentials: safe liveable communities , clean beaches and waterways ,parkland , quality employment opportunities with an excellent transportation system that allows connectivity across the region
  5. RAISING THE GDP AND BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES ACROSS THE AUCKLAND REGION:

For Auckland to truly be a competitive, international city we need to attract and develop quality businesses
  1. My Pledges
i will not urinate on any trees
I will not sign paintings I have not painted
I will not send drunken texts after 11pm
I will not send drunken press releases after 11pm
I will not hold important meetings in bars
I will not vote to fund Brian Rudman’s theatre
I will not put boozing with my mates on my council credit card
I will not stop putting piggy noses on troughing politicians
I will not punch ambulance officers
  2. The provisions of the Local Electoral Act 2001 allow for a territorial authority to hold a referendum on the issue of Maori seats. In line with my policy on transparency I want to put the question to the citizens of Auckland, rather than have it instituted in a closed room by diktat from a small number of politicians.”

The Local Electoral Act 2001 provides a mechanism for specifically creating reserved Maori seats. At any time, if five per cent of the eligible voting population in a local authority area sign a petition calling for Maori seats – or if the council itself votes to introduce Maori seats – a poll on the issue must be held within a specified timeframe under a well-defined process.

That provision under the Act is suitably weaselly that a small group of just 13 people could force something upon the citizens of Auckland.
  3. To get rate payers and tax payers a proper return on investment, and to ease congestion, the Whaleoil transport policy is to allow all trucks onto motorway bus lanes except during peak hours of 7am and 9.30am south bound, and 3.30am and 6.30pm north bound.
  1. RATES

There are too many people and businesses out there that are hurting. The promised efficiencies and reduced costs for the new 'Super City' must be delivered - now and in the future.
  2. TRANSPORT ENHANCEMENTS & COMMUNITY FACILITIES

We need to finish the busway with more spaces for park & ride at Oteha and a new park & ride at Silverdale to take the pressure off and deliver for Hibiscus Coast and Rodney people. Ferry services should be added down the coast with terminals at Takapuna and Browns Bay - connected with local shuttle buses and 'kiss & ride' to cut down on parking.
With huge growth in Albany and the Hibiscus Coast extra parks and recreation and community facilities are required urgently.
  3. ENVIRONMENT

We need to keep Project CARE going to stop sewage overflows onto our beaches. Local streams like Lucas Creek, Browns Bay and Stanmore Bay need cleaning up. Bush reserves and walkways should be established to improve the connections and the green spaces in our communities. The Regional Parks netword requires special recognition.
  4. JOBS AND BUSINESS GROWTH

Businesses need a 'kick start'. A new Auckland Council can provide the confidence and facilitiation to help make this happen. There is the extra capacity waiting to take off. Transport improvements, investing in local contractors, faster turnaround of building consents and faster Council response time will all help.
  5. SAFER COMMUNITIES

Council can do many things to make our communities safer. Programmes like the 'Ambassadors' in South Auckland can be extended to the North Shore and Hibiscus Coast. Preventative measures should be put in place to reduce vandalism and anti-social behaviour. Council can assist in running programmes for youth, make sure there are local recreational and lesiure opportunities for youth and look after children from their early years in ways that Council can through things like enviroschools, walking school buses, provisioning of locations for early childhood centres, playgrounds...
  1. RATES

The original selling point for the‘Super city’ was increased efficiencies and reduced costs- that original justification has disappeared off the radar. ‘Reduced costs to ratepayers’ needs to be put firmly back on the agenda. That means an end to the continuous cycle of rate increases year after year - people cannot afford them !
  2. TRANSPORT ENHANCEMENTS & COMMUNITY FACILITIES

This whole ward is growing... and fast – it needs community and recreational facilities to keep apace. We believe that this is an important part of the Council’s business – it’s what binds communities together and adds to our quality of life. It also needs an integrated transport system that will serve Auckland’s needs well into the future, that has to be all of Auckland and as far as the North Shore goes it can build on the already significant investment in the infrastructure established by the Northern busway.
  3. SAFER COMMUNITIES

Initiatives are required to make our communities safer to live in. This is a recurrent concern across the ward. Vandalism and anti-social behaviour are both a financial and a social cost. In other parts of Auckland innovative responses have been successful in combating behaviour that impacts negatively on people’s lives.
  4. ENVIRONMENT

Protecting and enhancing our natural environment is important – now and for future generations. Water quality at our beaches and in our streams must be maintained at the highest standard. As this area continues to grow more playing fields, open space and bush reserves will be required for our communities
  5. ECONOMIC GROWTH

Local businesses and employment need to be encouraged with strategic planning – so do 'work from home' opportunities. The real potential for sustained economic growth needs to be harnessed in those areas zoned for commercial/light industrial activities for the employment opportunities essential to our residents of all ages.
  1. Independent Progressive Leadership

Auckland needs an experienced independent Mayoral voice - not politically influenced - who will speak for and on behalf of the people. I am a man of the people and offer open minded, progressive, lateral thinking where the real issues and outcomes are the priority for our communities and the region as a whole.
  2. Looking after the Communities of Auckland

I am a Mayor who takes care of my community by listening to and acting on the needs of the people. I will continue to look after the communities of Auckland mindful of the diversity of needs, cultures, ages, abilities, and history.
  3. Public Transport

I have championed public transport, transit lanes, shuttle buses on the Northern Busway, airport buses, electric trains, ferries, free off peak fares for our seniors and reduced fares for students. We will provide a fully integrated transport system to get Auckland moving and as Mayor I will take a lead role in this.

  4. Infrastructure, Economic Growth and Problem Solving

An efficient prosperous Auckland will require quality infrastructure that provides connectivity to service a growing economy. With a strong business background, I have overseen significant achievements in this area and will continue to show committed leadership in the Auckland roll-out of much needed major infrastructure, e.g. the next harbour crossing

In terms of problem solving, two first priorities as North Shore Mayor were to solve the outstanding impasses of the Albany Senior High School and the Birkenhead Library - both of which were homeless. Concerned at the impact on these communities, I promised I would address these with urgency, and as a result both were swiftly resolved. With Mayoral leadership we also resolved the Whenuapai Airport controversy and the 18 year Pak 'N Save Wairau Road Supermarket wrangle.

  5. Public Open Space and a Vibrant City

Auckland is a special lifestyle city in the South Pacific that places a high priority on protecting its environment. We must ensure plenty of green spaces and clean beaches for a growing population. As Mayor I have worked hard to secure many more precious reserves and coastal areas for our city and region....and will continue to do so for all of Auckland.

I actively support the arts, culture, sports, entertainment, business, and tourism which together create a vibrant international city and region. Aucklanders will take pride in all that the city has to offer its people and visitors.
