Let’s have a fresh approach to health and cut through the politics.

Having a key role in successful commercial and NGO enterprises in the Health sector, I have experience in resolving the current issues I see facing Waitemata DHB - capital development, staffing/funding resources and service delivery.

My appointments in the Health sector include being a Director Waitemata Health (1992-94), Chairman Spectrum Care Trust (1993-2003) which is a Provider of services/accommodation for the Intellectually Impaired 1,000+ staff.

I am currently a Trustee of Dayspring Trust which deals with Mental Health issues and  Deputy Chairman Agape Homes Trust which provides services for the Intellectually Impaired.

My background is in financial services including Merchant & Investment Banking and accountancy. I am a member of the Institute of Directors. Qualifications: B.Com, CA, ACIS, Minst D.

I am an Elder of St Giles Church.

With your vote we will make a difference.

Top 5 Issues

  1. WDHB is the fastest growing and biggest DHB in the country. So issues of capital development, staffing resources, and best pratice service delivery take on a greater significance as it should be easier to adopt new approaches more easily than one could in a more established DHB.
  2. Better community access to health care devloving what can sensibly be devolved from hospitals to community health organisations. This should result in earlier intervention thereby avoiding the extra cost, pain & inconvenience of dealing with health issues when they become more serious
  3. The shortage of clinical staff affecting all DHB's in New Zealand. We train them up at great cost but many are now working offshore. We need to find ways to retain them and for them to pick WDHB as their employer of choice.
  4. Spending on health has increased enormously over recent years but outcomes on the whole have not improved - We need to find ways to do things more efficiently and meet patient needs before they become serious and costly.
  5. Improve IT systems for the seamless/timely access to patient records as needed by authorised medical practioners.

Personal Profile

My Vision:

Waitemata Health is the biggest and fastest growing DHB’s in New Zealand bringing with it its own unique problems. The changing demographics lead to issues of Capital Development, Staffing resources, and service delivery issues. I want the best possible health care at an affordable cost for those communities served by Waitemata Health.

What some community leaders think about Tracey being a director of Waitemata District Health Board……

Sir John Ingram CBE– “Tracey Adams would be an excellent board member of the Waitemata District Health Board. Not only has he had prior experience in this role he was an excellent chairman of the board of Spectrum Care for 9 years. I served under him as a board member and found him innovative, diligent, compassionate and with a thorough knowledge of the business.”
John Tamihere –“I have known Tracey Adams since 1993. Since 2006 I have worked closely with him at Te Whanau O Waipareira Trust. He is a man of integrity, and has a good knowledge of the health sector. His broad experience and vision is what we need on our Waitemata DHB.”

The primary role of the WDHB is to deliver high quality health services to its population in the most efficient and timely way it can.

That means the Board needs to be focused on its performance compared to all the other DHB's. Currently WDHB is lagging behind and thats not good enough. We want to be the best performing DHB in the country.

We need to be focused on:

  • Early intervention thereby avoiding the extra cost, pain and inconvenience of dealing with health issues when they become more serious.
  • Better community access to health care devloving what can sensibly be devolved from hospitals to community health organisations.
  • Improve IT systems for the seamless/timely access to patient records as needed by authorised medical practitioners.
  • We get our fair share of health funding.

Question

Industrial disputes with DHBs

Dr. Ali thanks for the question.

As I am currently not on the Board I do not have the full facts at my disposal to answer your first question and only a qualified answer to your second question. Yes, it seems reasonable for a 1% wage rise but I don\'t know the impact this would have on the finite budget the WDHB has signed off with the MOH/Govt.

One of my son\'s is a GP in New Zealand and I am aware of the temptation for our trained people to earn significantly bigger money offshore. If this was an easy problem to fix with all the brain power in health it would have been fixed by now. It is not a problem that WDHB can fix by itself. Govt. monetary and fiscal policies over time and the public response thereto has a lot to contribute to bringing equilibrium to international/NZ wage rates. What we can do at WDHB is to make it a place were people want to work because it is the best health provider in the country - we need to work on this. Also, we strive to be and have a reputation of being a fair and good employer in comparison to other DHB\'s in NZ.

With regard to supporting a strike whilst I may have sympathy I would not be able to support it. Individual members of a Board have to stand by the decision of the board irrespective of their personal opinion - a cabinet approach.
