I have been honoured to be a city councillor for the past 15 years and would love to serve Wellington for another 3 years. Over the years I have supported City Safety Initiatives: Youth Initiatives; Community Centre; Libraries; Our Housing Tenants; Retention of Citiops Works Dept; School Pools partnership; Homelessness Strategy; The Wet Hostel; Liquor bans where appropriate; Extending the Passport to Leisure to include superannuitants.
I totally oppose water privatisation and water meters.
This term I want to focus on a new project I am calling "Edible Wellington". In response to a petition, I was to see us planting trees, bushes, and other plants that we can eat. Imagine strolling through the streets and being able to pick and apple, a pear or some figs, gather a bucket of gooseberries, or strawberries or collect some veges for dinner.
Top 5 Issues
- Water privatisation
- Buildings on the Waterfront
- The threat of Wellington becoming a supercity
- Poor traffic planning
- Support for community centres
Personal Profile
I have been a councillor in Wellington for 15 years. I came to Wellington to study journalism over 20 years ago and fell in love with the place and never left. I was first elected as an Alliance councillor and I have remained unashamedly left leaning. I support council being involved in social issues, such as housing and caring for the homeless. I have most recently been an advocate for the concept of a Wet Hostel, a place where those who are unable to stop drinking can be cared for and can live with dignity and in safety.
I have lived in the Aro Valley for nearly 20 years. I love the Valley because of its keen sense of community, its history and it's fierce protection of it's heritage buildings. I live in a heritage listed building and consider myself a guardian of my home for future generations.
I have two beautiful girls whom I adopted from Siberia in Russia nearly four years ago, and becoming a mother has reinforced for me the importance of taking care of those less fortunate in our community. The measure of a community is the way in which it takes care of those who struggle in our community.
