Hi
How's it going? Good I hope. 2010 has been an awesome year and I'm in no doubt it can only get better for Aucklanders. You are all about to take part in a major historical moment and I encourage all of you to get involved in the upcoming election whether by voting or getting to know your council and mayoral candidates. By that, I don't just mean on the surface. You need to know who is financially backing them and what those backers expect if their candidate wins. You also probably need to assess if candidate promises can be fulfilled and you should find out who the council staff are. Council's elected representatives will be taking advice from these guys when it comes to forming their decisions on matters that impact you so you should get an understanding of who will be in the administration. Just so you all know, apart from three mates who've helped me by starting a net profile and getting some stickers and posters printed - that's my whole campaign. There is no corporate or political backing.
My one election promise is completely deliverable. If I am voted in as mayor I will donate half my salary to either a charity of the peoples' choice or council will hold a street party. The street will be chosen by council staff. They have a better understanding of what we can do and also they will be able to take care of safety and logistical concerns. The second election to find out what option Aucklanders wanted would be held on a social media site to keep costs down.
Just to let you all in on my campaign - I'm going for the apathy vote. I'm fine with JB and Len fighting it out for the politically aware but I'm after the people who think all politicians are the same so why bother? At the last Auckland city election, my understanding is, only around 40 per cent of eligible voters turned up to vote. So the people have not given anyone a clear mandate to run the city. I'm interested in getting as many of the apathetic to vote for me as possible. So if you don't care about politics, don't know who to vote for, you're only voting for a candidate because your parents tell you to or you're going to vote for someone with nice eyes just take a second thought. You can check out my policies and thoughts on the official face-book page, Shannon Gillies for Auckland SuperCity Mayor.

First of all I\'m going to be so upfront it\'s ridiculous. The only thing I can guarantee you 100 per cent is that if I am voted in I will give either half my salary to a charity of the voters\' choice or I\'ll put it towards a street party. The decision will be made by Auckland voters. There are other policies on our face book site. Please feel free to check it out. They\'re under the discussion panels. I know this answer isn\'t what you\'re looking for but I feel it is probably one of the few promises made during this election campaign that can be delivered. Who ever wins the mayoralty can say what ever they want this side of the election but they\'re not in office yet so won\'t be privy to the information and regulations being put into place behind the scenes. Nobody know what they\'re walking into. So as such my election promises are limited. If I do get in I will have to listen to council officers and take on the views of councillors and the public to make decisions that best represent what Auckland wants as a whole.
Thanks for your time and I hope you have a good rest of the week. Check out Facebook site Shannon Gillies for Auckland SuperCity Mayor. Just go to the discussion panel and the other policies are there.
Regards,
Shannon Gillies

Hi John
That\'s a great idea. I\'d like to be able to promise you that phone charges such as the one you mention above would change under my leadership but then that would be the use of some empty words. I would have to talk to council staff to see what we could do if elected. I can\'t say right now what would happen. There are annual plan submissions held that you could raise your idea at. Make sure you get your submission in early to bring it to council\'s attention. And follow it up as well. And generally keep pushing until you get an answer.
Have a good night,
Shannon

Hi Keith
I would. Anything that can get the public\'s view across clearly to council should be welcomed. If this idea is not picked up in the general follow up to the election I encourage you to put it in a submission to council\'s annual plan submissons when the time comes. Also put in anything you think that might improve Auckland. Annual plan or Long Term Council Community Plan submissions are a good way to get your ideas in front of council officers and councillors for consideration.
Have a good week,
Shannon
