Your full-time Mayor for Christchurch water quality - no chloride or fluoride added (unless there is a complete science case and full community consultation for it)
Standing for Christchurch Mayor, Councillor, or Community Board (Burwood-Pegasus / Hagley-Ferrymead ward)

Top 5 Issues
- Regional water quality - create economic and just alternative land use - no chlorine or fluoride added without good science and community consultation. Base the prosperity of Christchurch on a sound eco-city direction, and revitalise local business around this theme.
Central city recovery through an holistic transport, parking and walking plan, etc.
Invest effort to save our farmland. * - * Sustainable transport - it makes no sense and is emissions-costly, to trade water-intensive milk dehydrated by coal-burning, for imported oil, when we can grow both healthy food and fuel crops - close this energy trading loop to the benefit of all and the environment. Establish new trade in added value for less roading pressure from commodity freight. Untangle mixed transport modes for efficiency and safety (bus exchanges & lanes, cycleways etc).
- * A safe city - agriculture and industry training and employment for youth - head off unemployment, substance abuse and crime. Plan for regional growth through technical integration of migrant skills; innovate sustainable and obtainable housing. Support schools and communities to make a better future for our families and children. Prosperity for all.
- * A clean city - keep litter and pollutants off streets and out of parks and rivers. Educate + make cost of proper waste management less prohibitive. Complete the sewerage overflow upgrades, asap.
- * Democracy on Council - build a functional & purposive team to improve Christchurch & Canterbury inclusively. Start with gender equity: promote the election of a female councillor into the position of Deputy-Mayor, to carry out the public duties of the mayoress. Transparency & accountability: governance to balance the corporate executive and make it responsive to the public who fund it. Stop excessive salary inflation. Eliminate big ticket project waste and restrain rates. Promote proportional representation STV for expression of cultural diversity, and efficient direct democracy by forums, polls and online referenda etc - prepare for democratic future.
Personal Profile
Greetings citizens ~ Hi, I'm Rik.
Welcome to this Mayoral candidate page.
Christchurch is a great city, and can be so much more. Vision and know-how are required to get the province of Canterbury humming with sustainable economic development, that offers advanced training and employment opportunity to our young people and migrants. Let us build a sustainable housing industry, to integrate future growth and reap the Emissions Trading windfalls - prepare for climate change and climate refugees, for they are surely on their way..
Christchurch City must be a leader in this regional transition, of resource-wise transformation, and needs a fresh generation squarely at the helm - with an innovative, progressive and inclusive set of ideas.
Please help me to make the changes this city needs to move forward, for all of us - together.
In 2010, VOTE - Rik Tindall for Christchurch Mayor.

Yes, this is important, wherever possible. But the key is that representatives must stay in touch with communty issues, and act accountably for them, wherever they may be based.
My experience as an Environment Canterbury councillor for Christchurch East has connected me with much of Hagley-Ferrymead ward already, especially on coastal and resilience concerns. There is much more that I need to do, as consultation with all the relevenat community groups, however. I look forward to that future.
As a Cashmere resident of 18 years, planning to relocate to New Brighton currently, I greatly identify with the hillside environment. I lived in Linwood as a youht and well understand the social issues we have to address constructively in the central city.

check out other candidate's answersBachman Turner Overdrive? ... I think youth are hugely disrepected and uncatered for in the central city. You have been moved out of Cathedral Square (in favour of a tourist market) and Hack Circle / Cashel St Mall (in favour of trams and more tourist shopping) so where are you supposed to go / gather / congrate?
I will ensure that proper youth facilities and opportunities are created in Christchurch, if elected Mayor or Councillor.
