I think the endorsement of my campaign for Auckland Council by Sir Ron Carter speaks volumes about my commitment and ability to look after business interests. Ron says "Our city needs Councillors who will apply their knowledge and experience for the good of all. A great Council team will be built from those who respect and commit to each other. Penny's wisdom and consensus style will help create a Council for all Aucklanders. We need her on our Council."

Candidate Statement;

Penny Hulse

Independent-Standing up for the West.

Over the past 18 years I have represented this wonderful city as a councillor and in a number of leadership roles.

A Swanson resident, I am Waitakere City’s deputy mayor and am proud to have worked hard for the west’s special communities.

The new Auckland Council will require experience, determination and a strong consensus-building leadership style.  It must work closely with local communities and businesses to maintain the west’s unique identity.

I am committed to the vision of an environmentally sustainable, business friendly, cost effective, vibrant city.

I currently Chair Council’s Policy and Strategy Committee overseeing the economic, environmental and community direction, I am also an EECA and Community Waitakere Director as well as Patron of the Waitakere Special Olympics and Walsh Trust. I also chair the Waitakere Crime Prevention Group.

I will be a strong, experienced voice for the west in the new council. That is my pledge.

Top 5 Issues

  1. Keeping the spirit of the west alive:
I am strongly committed to a sustainable, vibrant, safe and financially secure community. In the West we work together. The region should be built on this spirit.
  2. Leadership:
The new Council will need strong leadership. I will help bring the Council together to create a coordinated, vibrant and cohesive region.
  3. Growing business:
Local businesses need to be supported and infrastcutre provided to grow local opportunities. The West must have a fair share of regional investment.
  4. Managing costs:
Costs can be reduced by ensuring a more sustainable approach to infrastructure, reducing energy and water use, and retaining water in community ownership.
  5. Public transport:
This is the key to a successful region. Double tracking and electrification of rail is vital, alongside safe cycling and walking initiatives.

Personal Profile

My husband Paul and I have lived in Swanson for 28 years and our two sons have grown up there.

We love being part of this special community and can't imagine living anywhere else.

Part of being in a community is about contributing to it.  I have done this through service in a number of differect ways over the years: on the DHB for six years, on the Licensing Trust for six years.  I started my contact with the Council as an activist, working with others in our community to urge the Council to have new way of thinking around a local landfill.  From that I realised that people in the community can make a real difference by being part of the Council, making things happen from the inside.

This has driven my approach on the Council - I work hard, I research the issues, I talk to people in the community and I work with my fellow Councillors to make good decisions that will improve the life of those of us that live in the West.

Weeds in Waitakere?

Awaiting response

Hi Albert,

I don\'t know if the \"super city\" can give any guarantees but I can promise to continue to advocate for the funding of our excellent Weed Free Waitakere team and to continue their excellent work. I have worked really hard to secure funding for Eco Matters trust to grow their capacity to deliver environmental initiatives that promote an environmentally sound and sustainable region.

What about us urban Waitakere-ites?

Awaiting response

Dear Adrian,

Over the last 18 years of Waitakere city we have worked very hard to protect our environment in both the urban and the rural parts of our city.

In our urban areas we have undertaken huge urban renewal projects in New Lynn, Henderson and in smaller centres like Glen Eden and Te Atatu. These projects will continue and our community development projects in Massey and Ranui will still need to be propmoted and supported.

I turned the first sod of the Maclaren Park community facility this morning and I will cetainly be pushing for the continued growth of community facilities in our urban communities. We still have much to do to ensure that the work that the community has started in these communities is continued. I championed the building of the youth centre in Henderson and believe our youth must be included in the planning for the new city, we need to keep up the investment in sports facilities and in performace venues. The hockey turf being built at Henderson high is a good example of a council/ school partnership that can work well and I will be is

We have worked to get upgraded public transport in Waitakere and the need to continue the upgrading of rail and bus services in the west is a real focus for me.

Project Twin streams is an urban stream restoration project and awesome commmunity development project and one I have had the privilage to oversee for about 10 years. I will be ensuring that this project goes region wide.

Ongoing investment in our businsss centres is vital and the next stage of the Wesgate development which will deliver 10 000 jobs to the west is a key focus for me as well.

There is a lot to do in our community of the west; protecting our wild places like our beaches and Ranges is vital but also supporting our town centres and our communities around them needs to continue. Our rural and urban boards will need to collaborate to ensure that all the comunities get their fair share of investment and that the great work that Waitakere city council has done across the city continues.

These are just some brief ideas...........call me if you need to discuss this any further.
