I am committed to ensuring that Roskill is a cohesive community and a safe place for you to live, work and play. I have served on the current Mt Roskill Community Board since 2007.

Top 5 Issues
- ACCOUNTABILITY:
HONESTY
I believe in representing the people of our in an honest and open manner. I will ensure that our communities are engaged and listened to regarding issues that face our distinct local communities.
I have demonstrated this honesty and integrity by supporting and advocating on behalf of groups in our area in this last term of our current Mt Roskill Community Board.
INTEGRITY
I have a strong sense of personal integrity and responsibility in all areas of my personal and professional life. You must trust and have confidence that the people you elect will be responsible with your money and community.
RESOLVE
I have a strong resolve to champion issues for our whole community, without the politicking!
I stood for the Community Board at the last election and was elected as i wanted to bring a new style and face to local politics, or more appropriately local communities.
I will work hard with any and all groups that are committed to seeing our local area and region succeed and prosper!! - AFFORDABILITY:
CREATING AN AFFORDABLE AREA TO LIVE AND WORK IN
All of us know that living in Auckland can be expensive, this is no different for the families in the Mt Roskill area.
The new council must reduce the burden on households and businesses by extracting savings from the new, streamlined council arrangements.
Investments must be channelled into the essential infrastructure our region and local communities need.
It will be a challenge for the new leadership to keep rates as low as possible without decreasing the core services that residents expect, and they must deliver better value for money.
Spending can be controlled to large extent if the Auckland Council focussed on core local government activities and services and not duplicate central government’s welfare functions locally.
Water and waste water costs will be kept to the minimum necessary to maintain a world class system
- SAFE COMMUNITIES:
STRENGTHENING AND PROTECTING OUR VIBRANT COMMUNITY
I recognise and currently work with the individual neighbourhoods and cultural communities that combine to make up the wider Mt Roskill (Puketepapa) community.
We need to feel safe in our community. I will not and have not tolerated anti-social behaviour on our streets and in our communities, and will continue to advocate vigorously for effective policing.
I will encourage and support arts, sport and cultural activities across our neighbourhoods. I will work collaboratively with community, cultural and sports groups to help build amazing facilities.
Our multi-cultural communities are at the heart of our unique culture. My team will strengthen our rich culture working with Maori and local Iwi, with Pasifika, and other ethnic and community groups.
We will promote and invest in programmes that celebrate the things we share and recognise our diversity - both of which will make Mt Roskill an amazing place to live. - ENVIRONMENT:
PRESERVING AND ENHANCING OUR ENVIRONMENT
We are proud of our unique environment, with its combination of Beautiful beaches, creeks, waterfalls, Volcanoes, parks, local farm and schools as well as the architectural heritage across the area
I will ensure we preserve and protect our environmental assets, while allowing individuals the freedom to enjoy and improve their urban and rural private property.
High quality low-cost designs and planning will be encouraged together with the sensible management of growth and development.
We will advocate for stricter vehicle emissions standards to improve our Region’s air quality, and enhance the water quality in all our streams and beaches. - TRANSPORT:
MAKING IT EASIER TO GET AROUND
Citizens and Ratepayers will invest in transport options which enable more of us to move around more conveniently.
We will commit to essential public transport and roading infrastructure for people and goods. An effective single ticketing system for public transport will be implemented.
We will ensure that the new Auckland Transport agency works constructively with central government to complete the motorway network and major arterial routes across the Region.
We will ensure careful benefit cost consideration is undertaken before ratepayers’ money is invested in these major projects.
Personal Profile
My name is Nigel Turnbull. I am 31 years of age and of Scottish/Irish Ancestry. I am married to Elizabeth and have four wonderful kids that keep me on my toes! My wife is Fijian and has family villages from the Yasawas Islands and Tailevu.
I am a committed Christian and attend a local church, where I also serve as a leader in a range of areas.
I originally grew up on Great Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf, before coming to Auckland as a teenager to attend Auckland Boys Grammar School. My family has had family lands on Great Barrier dating back many decades. I have lived in both Central and South Auckland and love this amazing city we live in!
In 2000 I started as a Constable in the New Zealand Police. I began my career in South Auckland, working as a frontline Officer right across all station areas over a three-year period. I learnt a great deal from the experience and met some wonderful people in the process.
In 2003 I joined the Youth Aid section at Avondale Police station, and have been working here for more than 7 years now. During this time I spent a short period of time working at Onehunga Police station as the Youth Aid Officer as well.
During this time I have primarily focused on local youth offenders and street gangs. During the period from 2005-2008 the community of Mt Roskill was under siege from an explosion of street gang activity that caused mayhem within our community.
I became involved in this issue from the beginning, working with community groups and the wider stakeholders group to lead a small team of dedicated Youth Aid Police Officers to pro-actively work with these young people and the various community groups.
The aim was to reduce Youth Offending and street gang activities. To date we have been highly successful in reducing gang participation and youth offending in the wider Mt Roskill and adjoining communities.
It was through this role that I began to meet and work with a large number of various community groups and Government and Council organisations. It was here that I really began to see the practical value and outworking of wider community involvement in solving and dealing with issues within our communities.
It was a short time later that I was approached to stand for the current Mt Roskill Community Board that I serve on at the moment.
I have found serving the community in both my role as a Police Officer and member of the Community Board a highly rewarding experience.
I work hard and do my utmost to make good quality decisions for the community. I know that my experiences within the Police have given me the personal integrity and discipline to make excellent decisions in complex and involved situations.
I am not overly political and prefer to approach matters that I deal with from a position of principle and work constructively with people to find the best possible outcome for all parties. I know what it is to both advocate and compromise on issues, and prefer to see my role as both a representative but also servant to my community.
I know I have the personal and professional attributes that would make me an asset to the Puketepapa Local Board, and ask for your support and vote to see our community succeed under the new Council structure.
I also ask your support for my colleagues standing for the Puketepapa Local Board; they are a fine group of individuals with a long history of service and commitment to our community.
