Nil disclosed

I'm AUT University's North Shore Campus Pro Vice−Chancellor and Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences Dean. Currently the Board's Deputy Chair I seek re−election to ensure implementation of planned initiatives to enhance our health services. Progress has been made during challenging financial times but more remains to be done to increase timely access and further improve outcomes. Patron of the North Shore Community Health Network for over 20 years, I have long experience in senior management, board governance, community development, advocacy, research and clinical practice. Previous roles include Mental Health Foundation National Director, World Federation for Mental Health President and chair or member of various voluntary, statutory and government advisory bodies in health, social development, justice and education. My current research involvements focus on the health of older people, child health, Pacific and migrant health and addictions. Please also support fellow board member Warren Flaunty with whom I work effectively.

Conflicts of Interest

I hereby disclose the following conflict of interest with the Waitemata District Health Board at the date of my notice of consent to being nominated as a candidate: I have been the patron of Raeburn House (North Shore Community Health Network) since its inception. This voluntary sector health promotion organisation receives grants from Waitemata DHB and other sources to support its work. I hold various senior positions at Auckland University of Technology, including Pro Vice−Chancellor (North Shore), Dean of the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences and Co−director of the National Institute for Public Health and Mental Health Research. The Faculty provides a range of health and related services. It also has a formal memorandum of understanding with Waitemata DHB which includes a commitment to work together to enhance the health of the communities they jointly serve. To this end the University and the DHB collaborate on a number of health delivery, education and research projects. I am an appointed board member of Health Workforce New Zealand, recently established by government to drive innovation in workforce development and ensure that the country has the appropriate mix and number of health professionals. The Board engages actively with DHBs. I have played a role in the establishment, development and governance of a number of voluntary sector organisations, e.g. Health Promotion Forum, Mental Health Foundation, Alzheimer's Foundation, Victim Support, AIDS Foundation, Refugees as Survivors Centre, Phobic Trust and 60s−Up movement. While no longer holding office in these and other organisations I have had a close involvement with, I retain an interest in their work and in some cases have ongoing informal links. Some of these organisations may from time−to−time receive support from the DHB to assist their work.

Possible future conflict of interest:
I am currently involved in the establishment of a new voluntary sector organisation, Social Services Online Trust, to develop and provide on−line health and related resources and referral information nation−wide. This organisation may in future have some form of involvement with the DHB, along with the wider health sector. To the best of my knowledge I have no other conflicts of interest, or likely future conflicts of interest, with the DHB at the date of my notice of consent to being nominated as a candidate for membership of the DHB board. In the event that conflicts do arise I will declare them and act accordingly.
