Dr Lyndon Walker, Future West candidate for Henderson-Massey Local Board
I am a proud West Aucklander and I want to provide strong local representation for the Henderson-Massey ward. I want to ensure that the Super City merger does not adversely affect the citizens of West Auckland. I believe that resources like public libraries, parks and community centres should remain under public control, and be available for all members of the community to access and enjoy.
I am a Senior Lecturer in Finance at Unitec, and Deputy-Chair of the Unitec Research Ethics Committee. I hold qualifications in Finance, Statistics, Education and Sociology, including a Masters of Science, and a PhD. I have mentored West Auckland youth through the Project K youth mentoring scheme and have also been involved in community projects and charity work through Rotaract. In my spare time I enjoy playing indoor soccer, reading and playing guitar.
Please vote for me and the Future West team to represent you.
Top 5 Issues
- Community representation - West Auckland needs a strong voice to ensure that Supercity resources allocated in a fair and equitable manner and that West Auckland does not miss out. Future West stands for "Your Street, Not Queen St".
- Retaining community assets - Public libraries, community houses, and other public assets should remain accessible by all West Aucklanders.
- No privatisation of water and no new waste water charges - Water is a basic human right. It shouldn't be sold off to the highest bidder and used for making a profit.
- Good public transport - With a single council, we have the opportunity to finally get public transport right.
- Accountability - Public officials are elected by you and are there to serve you. I believe that public officials should be accountable to the public and serve the public, rather than pandering to whims of a few select individuals and corporations, and serving themselves before their community.
Personal Profile
Future West has formed to make sure West Aucklanders get the best possible outcome from the ‘Super’ city mess. The coalition’s goal is to get strong, progressive local people elected, so the Waitakere way is kept alive in the new, amalgamated structure. The coalition backs community-power and keeping community assets like libraries, pools and water in community control. It wants safer streets, local jobs, better public transport and to see the Eco-City values spread across the region. It also supports Maori representation on Council.

Question
Lyndon Walker's Reply
I am strongly in favour of having some form of inorganic collection available in West Auckland. Although some view inorganic collection as an eyesore, it provides a valuable service for ridding households of large items that could be a health hazard such as damp mattresses and rotting furniture. These are items that are otherwise difficult to dispose of. In areas that do still have an inorganic collection, much of what is collected is sorted for recycling or reuse.
