I am standing for the Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board and the Canterbury District Health Board.

1. Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board

I am an independent candidate and wish to serve the community I have lived in for over 20 years. Happily married to Ellie, we have three school age children, the eldest at Cashmere High School and the others at Beckenham School. I am a businessman with experience nationwide and internationally, specialising in construction equipment and the recycling of construction debris. Along with consulting on recycling projects I have designed and manufactured equipment used worldwide.

I would like to see a closer connection between the community board and the neighbourhoods through regular meetings with stakeholders and ratepayers. I support effective front line services and want to see these enhanced through extended trading hours.

I support sustainability through the promotion of composting at home where practicable. Ultimately onsite recycling is the way to go and is the most cost-effective means at our disposal for minimising waste. Residents could be supplied composting units for free in addition to the wheelie bins, the cost being offset by savings in transportation.

My target is to achieve a high level of environmental sustainability and for residents to receive maximum support from their local government. http://kenhorlor.blogspot.com/

2. Canterbury District Health Board

I am an independent and first time candidate for the board.  My skill is in getting the structure of the organisation right to achieve its full potential.

Why did I get interested in the DHB ? My eldest daughter suffers congenital heart disease, diagnosed at an early stage. Over the following 15 years we have been in and out of hospital countless times. The staff are wonderfully committed. However the organisation has become bureacratic and it is easy to see why people become lost in the system.

My focus is as a consumer and my business experience means I can see areas where simple steps can be taken to improve the delivery and access to services. Enough capacity has to be built into the system to meet future demand and shortsighted planning needs to avoided at all times. The board needs to be vigilant about funding and to be at the forefront of efforts to secure more of it.

My pledge is to work for the people of Canterbury to achieve better services and greater funding.

Personal Profile

I have lived in Christchurch more than 30 years, and was born and bred in Nelson. I grew up in a civil construction environment, an area I've worked in most of my life after graduating from Canterbury University and Christchurch Teachers' College. I set up my own business in 1990 and this grew to being a nationwide operation and overseas, principally in the USA and UK. My specialist area is in the recycling of construction debris, but in general anything to do with construction equipment, earthmoving, sand and gravel, ready-mix concrete are areas of technical know-how.

I am married to Ellie and we have three daughters, the eldest is in year 12 at Cashmere High School and currently on a school trip to Japan, the birth place of her mother. The other daughters are at Beckenham School, in year 7, and the youngest in year 1. We have lived in Beckenham over 20 years, firstly in Corson Avenue, then we moved to Waimea Terrace in a new place clad with recycled bricks.

I bring a down to earth commonsense approach to decision-making.

Ken Horlor's Reply

Purchase of McVicars forest

I have not formed an opinion around the purchase and would base any decision on the facts.

Port Hills bike tracks

Tony, you start out by making a statement that something is being destroyed. Before answering your question therefore, it is necessary to ascertain whether that is the case or not, and then if so whether it is a problem. As a hiker, I do not go mountain biking and therefore do not see the problem per se.
