Kate Joblin has served as a Whanganui District Health Board member for five years, the last three as chair. She says it is time to seek the mandate of the community by seeking election as an independent candidate. Joblin acknowledges hard times ahead for DHBs, and says her experience as DHB chair, member of numerous community boards, and as an accountant running her own practice gives her the skills to take the board forward. She grew up in Wanganui, raised six children here (all born at Wanganui Hospital), and has aging parents in the city, so knows how important excellent, accessible healthcare is to the communities in the district. She says for health services to survive the board needs to work proactively by constantly examining its performance, listening to patients, and working with others.
