Hello, I’m Kate Fulton and I’m excited to be standing for council. I was born and raised in Nelson and moved back here last year, because I believe it is one of the best places in the world to raise a family. Nelson is a truly special place to live. I feel privileged to be a part of this community and I want to contribute to its vibrancy.
Like many I left Nelson to study. I completed a BSc(Hons) in chemistry and art history at Canterbury, then a PhD in biomedical research at Cambridge University, UK. I worked as a research scientist and lecturer at Monash University in Melbourne. I have a son who is 12 and twin daughters who are 10.
My science background provides a rational and open-minded understanding of the many issues facing council. A keen interest in education, public health and well-being allows me to empathise with community group concerns. Community consultation is key when making decisions in the council chambers.
I support NCC's commitment to its sporting facilities, arts events and it’s Heart of Nelson strategy. These choices enhance the social well-being for all ages, especially Nelson's youth. The sustainable and affordable development of a performing arts and conference centre has the potential to strengthen our economy, particularly during winter months.
Concentrating on improving public transport and prioritising the safety of Nelson for pedestrians and cyclists is an achievable and feasible goal. This will decrease traffic along the waterfront and elsewhere in Nelson. Any proposals for the alternative routing of heavy vehicle traffic need to be considered in a manner which unites our communities.
Economic growth in science, technology and education are important for attracting people to return to Nelson. Promoting NMIT and encouraging its partnership with universities and the Cawthron Institute will increase job opportunities and provide more educational opportunities for those who want to live, work and study in Nelson.
If elected, I will ensure council works effectively to make economically and ecologically intelligent decisions, delivering its best to all, now and in the future.
