I am a 56 year old self−employed consulting geologist and resident of Hokitika. While I work in the mining industry I am fully aware of the importance of tourism and farming to the region. Council's role is not to invest in economic development but through plans, policies and ongoing monitoring create an environment where people and businesses can thrive
without adverse environmental impacts. My focus will be to ensure this happens.
I remain opposed to the extensive aerial use of 1080 and will continue to argue the use against its indiscriminate use on the West Coast as I did when I last represented the district. At the same time we must control the spread of TB to protect our livestock fanners and ground based methods have been shown to be highly effective in killing only the target pests.
