What I can do for Auckland

Overhaul and develop a transport infrastructure that’s in line with Aucklander’s habits and needs.

Rejuvenate and revamp the way we consult the community and make it easier for you to have your say

  • eg via quick online polls on the website that the council is accountable to

Reduce bureaucracy surrounding building consents.

Openly and in simple terms discuss and consult on rates spending so everyone understands and has a say on how the council intends to spend their money.

Liaise with the police, business and the community to make ALL streets not just main streets safer and reduce the crime on our streets.

Encourage good urban design and future planning for better land use and sustainable living.

Find a different approach to the graffiti problem, currently a multimillion dollar problem affecting every suburb of Auckland.

Provide quality community facilities in line with the healthy cities objectives.

Encourage private contributions to public amenities and places.

Advocate to central government and other agencies for achieving regional interests priorities and preferences.

Make improvements to the maintenance and use of regional parks, walkways and beaches.

I will make the tough decisions and stand accountability by them.

Top 5 Issues

  1. Transport:Public Transport must be cheaper and faster for it to be attractive to users,it must have technology such as WIFI to add value to the service and experience,an intergrated ticketing service must be implemented, improvements to shelters of train stations to protect users from the elements. A western link and CBD link to the airport. Overhauling of the bus network an routes in line with Aucklanders habits and needs focusing on the flash points. Safer cycle ways to increase patronage, utilise our water and harbours to ferry people from point to point.
  2. Law and Order:Kirwan will liaise with the police, businesses and the community to make ALL streets not just main streets safer and reduce the crime on our streets. Explore different approaches to the graffiti problem, a problem costing the regions Councils 5.5million, money that could be spent on commuinity based projects, health city objectives but to name a few.
  3. Abolish Bureaucracy surrounding consents. It shouldn't cost $1000 for a spa pool consent, but currently does! it's no wonder people dodn't bother getting them. Demolition consents for removing items from your property, money that could be better spent on improving your properties. Encourage better urban design and future planning for better land use and sustainable living.
  4. Rejuvenate and revamp the way we consult the community and make it easier for you to have your say

◦eg monthly referenda utlising technology, online polls on the website that the council is accountable to.

Personal Profile

About Me

Born Feb ‘79 in New Lynn, I attended Fruitvale School and Lyndale Athletics club and was a keen member of the Green Bay Soccer Club, coached under the watchful eye of Brent The Barber.

I attended Dilworth School for my secondary schooling where I excelled in sports and went on to be Deputy Head of my boarding house, School Sports Captain and School Prefect.

I then attended Teachers Training college (Auckland University) where I achieved a B.Ed (Teaching) before setting off to Europe to undertake my O.E. At this point, I thought all of my dreams had come true when I got the opportunity to play rugby in England.

During this period and after spending time in Europe and the Middle East, I developed a keen interest in transport and infrastructure. After motor biking the length of Vietnam with a friend I returned to NZ and spent some time teaching before embarking on my career in local government.

I started working at Manukau City Council as part of the compliance team, before later becoming part of the Building Authority. My frustration with all the red tape has played a big part in making the decision to get into local politics. We need to sort this out.

I first stood for election back in 2007, narrowly missing out by some 420 votes. At the time I vowed to come back and here I am, more passionate and more determined to be involved in shaping the future for all West Aucklanders
