Hiku spent his childhood at Oramahoe and Motatau where he attended the Motatau Maori District High School. Moved to farming in Waimamaku, Hokianga in 1970. Hiku is married to Venus, and they have 2 adult daughters, and six Grandchildren. Their son James, passed away in 1989. Hiku has been involved in many local community boards such as the Waimamaku Maori Committee, School Management Committee and the South Hokianga Maori Executive. Hiku is currently Chairman of the South Hokianga Co−Operating Parish Committee, the South Hokianga Anglican Pastorate and the President of the Hokianga Historical Society. Hiku has been a member of the Hokianga Health Enterprise Trust and has been chairman of the Trust since 2008. Hiku is extremely keen to become a member of the Board of Directors for the Northland District Health Board as he feels he would be a valuable asset in contributing toward Maori and Rural Health.
