"there was  - and always had been - another tradition to politics,...
a tradition based on the simple idea that we have a stake in one another,
and that what binds us together is greater than what drives us apart'.
- Barack Obama, 'The audacity of hope'

I decided to step aside from parish ministry to serve the people of Burwood Pegasus by standing for Council.

I fought against the 24% rent increase in Council housing rents and supported  affected tenants. As a Coast to Coast participant, I want better care of the places I kayak – the Waimakariri and Avon rivers.

I will work for a more open and financially responsible Council, and for reliable local bus services ahead of an expensive tourist tram.

I support increasing the number of neighbourhood support groups, which build relationships among neighbours, reduce graffiti and crime, and are vital in emergencies. Residents associations provide an important link between the community and Council, and need Council support.

If elected, I will arrange regular clinics to meet with residents.

I’m proud to be endorsed by Jim Anderton, and to be standing with
Cr Chrissie Williams and the People’s Choice Team.

Top 5 Issues

  1. A paramount issue for Christchurch is Vision, which may be understood as 'A preferred future,' (Stephen Covey)
The future for Christchurch that the People's Choice 2021envisions looks like this:
"We want it to be a great place to live, work and play, where all its citizens feel they belong. A safe city, free from the fear of crime."

For The People's Choice 2021, the following four issues have become critical for the city:
  2. Running the city in the people's interest
  3. Protecting our precious water

    Is it right?
that we should lose our clean drinking water?
that we should lose the ability to swim and fish in our rivers?
that we should lose our vote on these issues?

My Coast to Coast participation has added to my thinking on water - whether it's about the threat of Didymo, a low water threat at Woodstock from CPW water take or rubbish in grade 1 (still) water such as the Avon - chairs, tyres, oil.
  4. Ending extravagance and
    reckless borrowing
  5. Developing an open, democratic Council

For The People's Choice 2021, Greater fiscal responsibility, transparency and priority for people will be the hallmarks of the next Council.

Personal Profile

I’m 46, married to Anthea and we have 6 children, four at secondary school and two at primary. I have been a Presbyterian Minister for over 20 years, finishing at the end of March 2010 to focus on standing in the Burwood/Pegasus Ward. I am currently working as a Celebrant, while remaining a Minister, which enables me to offer various forms of marriage and funeral services.

I am goal-driven, something which has lead me to take part in three Coast to Coast events, 2001 (Team), 2003 (Individual) and 2009 (Individual). I have also taken part in numerous half-marathon and triathlon events.

Running is time-out for me and I enjoy running in the Port Hills especially, using the time to think and plan and reflect.

I have felt safer cycling in the Coast to Coast! than around the city and will support the ongoing establishment of cycle lanes in a bid to re-establish Christchurch as a good and safe place to cycle.

Kayaking has enabled me to take in the various tributaries of the Waimakariri, beginning upstream at Mount White Bridge through to the motorway bridges across the lower Waimakariri and including the gorge further up. I have paddled in low, medium and high flow and realise the very real impact that water take for irrigation could have on the Woodstock section of the river, not only for recreational users but for the integrity of the river itself.

I will support the Council in ensuring that development does not occur around the more vulnerable, unconfined aquifers in the McLeans Island and Airport area, which run closer to the surface than in the city and are more prone to contamination. Once our water is polluted, there is no turning back, for the present generation and those to come.
