He previously served as the Mayor of Papakura from 1983 to 1992. George taught at Rowandale School in the 1970s. He co−sponsored a successful petition to enable Counties Manukau residents to make toll−free local telephone calls. In Parliament, George has used his influence to help champion the construction and opening of Alfriston College, The Gardens School, Reremoana School, and Te Matauranga School. As Minister of Police George oversaw the expansion of the Manurewa Police Station in Halver Road.
