As an Independent, I have no hidden agenda. If you want a hard working, decisive and approachable person who always gets results, vote for me. As Vice Chairperson of the local Ratepayers’ Association I have won every issue I have tackled.

I am passionate about the health issues of the people of this area and I am determined to make a difference. I am passionate about equal and prompt access to health services for all people regardless of race. I wish to see support for the elderly to remain in their own homes as long as possible. I am passionate about retaining our young doctors and nurses by better working conditions. Having experienced the health system from the inside as a result of a cycle accident five years ago, which left me crippled, I know the pitfalls and want to improve conditions in hospitals for all.

Top 5 Issues

  1. To improve conditions in hospitals and reduce waiting times in the Emergency Dept. for cancer treatment and for elective surgery through the retention of NZ trained doctors and nurses
  2. To give priority to policies to cut the number of people with diabetes through improved diet and exercise
  3. To improve the health of all people –to change attitudes to smoking, fast food, alcohol and drug taking and to provide more services to deal with the growing problems of drug/alcohol dependence especially in young people
  4. To ensure provision of carer support to enable the elderly and disabled to remain in their own homes
  5. To cut wastage and ensure the available funds are targeted at essential medical services not wasteful administration

Personal Profile

Tick the box for Gayleen Mackereth

I am a Ministry of Education E-Fellow, a contract researcher and author. I speak four languages.

I am married with  grown children. I have lived in Counties Manukau for thirty-two years and have been on the Committee of the local Residents and Ratepayers Association for some years,  working as Vice Chairperson for the past year

With one in five people in CMDHB suffering from some form of disability, I have been actively involved since my accident in improving conditions for disabled. I have improved access for all in my area by getting pram crossings installed on every road leading to the major shopping areas and schools. I have campaigned for better disability parking areas and I have actively pressured politicians for a covered arena for Riding for the Disabled. I have  recently won an appeal to Government to prevent a dangerous wheelchair ramp being built.

I have spent a lifetime working with young people in Counties Manukau as Head of Dept at Edgewater College, and previously at James Cook High School, as well as working at Howick and Pakuranga Colleges. During that time I have dealt with thousands of young people of every ethnicity, many of them our up and coming doctors and nurses. I want to see these young NZ trained doctors and nurses retained by our Health system not lured overseas by better working conditions. I have also witnessed first hand the ravages of poor diet and diabetes, and the suffering of children from troubled homes, giving me both insight and empathy with a wide range of people.

I am a person who always gets the results I campaign for, so if you want action, vote for me.
