As a councillor in 2004, I believed “development” was about improving the public condition. We had finished the Library and had a total expenditure barely above $5 million.
Today, as we approach Plan Change number 100, we have surrendered all development to privacy - of which, not one has been brought to the table by a councillor.
All are dictated by and for the personal benefit of private business interests at ever increasing cost to us the ratepayers.
As a direct result, our expenditure has exploded such that we have borrowed around $70 million to finance the increases in infra-structure now necessary to support it. We now pay a sum exceeding our original expenditure, just to pay the interest.
It is unsustainable just as it is destructive of all our hopes for ourselves and our future generations. My intention is to bring reality to a council clearly out of control.
