I grew up here, went to school, played rugby, sailed and rowed here. This is my town. I am one of the lucky ones who have come back, working as a coal mine safety adviser. Of five children, only one brother, a farmer, was able to remain in the region. Young people should be able to stay and find well paid jobs here. The WDC needs a new leadership. We need more thriving businesses in our district. We need more, younger wage earners. We have to do this as two cultures, European and Maori, together with new immigrants who bring new talents. The river runs through the heart of our community, bringing fresh life daily. With the coast, the river makes our region unique in the country, unique for tourists, if we sell it well. We have not been selling ourselves well. It is now time to do so.
