Darel Hall - The People’s Choice 2021
I am married with twin baby girls living in our first home in North Richmond, around the corner from the Shirley Community Centre. I want my girls to get what I got – clean water, libraries, green parks, safe streets, and a good education - St Albans Primary and St Bede’s for me, followed by political science and management degrees at the University of Canterbury.
I lead a business taking care of 1,500 mainly 17 – 22 year old students in Halls of Residence at the University of Canterbury. We provide a good service at a reasonable price by listening to our students and discussing what we can do to continually improve. And that’s what our Council needs to do.
I manage youth behaviour on a daily basis – with more success than failure. It isn’t easy but I know what works. You have to be real, listen, and connect. And that’s what our Council needs to do.
Our Community Board needs to be real, listen, connect and then push our needs to Council. Most fair-minded citizens can do Community Board work. But telling Council where we stand on the big issues is where this Community Board should use its mandate - us and our opinions.
Where were current board members on issues like Ellerslie, the Henderson bail out, the 24% Council housing rent increases? Nowhere to be seen.
If you elect me, I want to talk about the big issues for our future. I want to end community board silence, and make sure Council knows what our people think and feel.
