Top 5 Issues

1. 2 YEAR RATES FREEZE
   
   Are you sick of your rates going up every year? Well, so am I!
   
   My aim is to freeze the rates at their current levels for 2 years from July 1st, 2011.
   
   The council, just like you and I, must learn to live within it's means, so as your Mayor, I will demand prudent spending, and be looking for ways to make genuine savings from within councils current budget.
   
   The new Council I lead will initiate a review of the councils rating methods. It is vital to ensure equitable outcomes. There must be district-wide confidence in all our rating systems. Currently that is not the case for waste-water and storm-water funding.
   
   At the same, the new council I lead, will take a proactive role in promoting the Peninsula.
   
   In 2012, when the new Kopu Bridge opens, we'll be ready to maximise every opportunity so that businesses on the Peninsula will prosper and grow.
   
   Local job creation will also be a core strategy of my new council.

2. ABOLISH BOAT RAMP FEES
   
   I don't want you to pay for using boat ramps, in fact, I don't want anybody to have to pay for using any boat ramps on the Coromandel.
   
   Boating is part of our economic lifeblood . . . so why stop the flow by putting up barriers in the way of the very people who will help grow our economy?
   
   If you DO NOT want to PAY BOAT RAMP FEES
   
   The boat ramp issue, however, is part of a much bigger picture, where we have to protect our environment for the future and at the same time promote our uniqueness so that we can all prosper.
   
3. LEADERSHIP
   I will:
   
   Introduce proper meeting procedure to allow elected members a more effective role in setting and monitoring the Council's performance.
   
   Revise and revitalise the Council's out-dated committee structure.
   
   Establish a District Plan Committee to deal effectively with the introduction of our new plan in 2012-13.
   
   Address the controversy over the aerial application of 1080 by allowing a public referendum to guide the Council's approach.
   
   Change the meeting schedule back to four weeks rather than six, to ensure community groups get proper representation.
   
   Council meetings will move around the district so that all major population bases get the chance to see democracy in action. We must
   show the public that Council is about the whole Peninsula. Let's have regularly scheduled meetings in Tairua , Whangamata, Whitianga, Coromandel, Pauanui and Thames.
   
   Let's take democracy to the people.
   
   I look forward to working positively with a new, united Council, putting the interests of our District first.
4. TOURISM
   
   Like most Kiwis, I love going bush.
   
   The Wentworth Valley, near Whangamata should be the start of one of the great walking tracks of New Zealand.
   
   I want to help make this dream a reality, and at the same time create new jobs and new business opportunities, as well as opening up new vistas to the visitors who will flock here to experience all our wonderful Peninsula has to offer.
   
   If you make me Mayor, one of my main objectives will be to bring together the people and organizations who can make this happen, and for my council to embrace this golden opportunity.
   
   I will also oversee a review of Tourism Coromandel's performance, to condiser integrating their activities with our highly effective I-site network. This will add significant value to our District's economy
   
   Let's tread lightly, and grow our economy at the same time

5. BROADBAND
   
   How can the Peninsula move forward if we don't have the right tools?
   
   On my video page of my website, there's a couple of links to my policy videos on YouTube.
   I chose to produce these videos in HD Hi Res quality so they could be watched in full screen, but they can take an age to load and play, although they do play faster when small.
   
   This highlights a major infrastructure issue.
   
   It seems that the Coromandel Peninsula may have to wait 10 years to have high speed broadband installed.
   
   This is unacceptable.
   
   We should be encouraging innovative, low impact businesses which need high speed, reliable broadband, but why would they even consider setting up in business here if we cant offer them the services they expect and require, or are available elsewhere?
   
   The council I lead will actively encourage broadband infrastructure through direct negotiation with the appropriate partners, to ensure the Peninsula doesn't get left behind.
   
   I believe the Christchurch City Council has already taken this approach and forged relationships with the major telco players.
   
   Unfortunately, the speed our current Council leadership is moving on this critical infrastructure issue, can only be described as . . . dial up.
