Mayor:
I am standing for Mayor because the position carry's more weight relating to policy formation, spending and Central Government. This relationship is important as region and Central Government priorities are often naive misplaced and short term. A mayor or council that curry's favour with central government may do the district enormous harm while gaining no advantage for the ratepayers.
The last 20 years has seen continuous pressure for district councils to delivery government functions with no real authority. The result is district councils acting as delivery agents for ineffective government programmes at ratepayers expense.
The council must demand that Central Government allocate funding and authority and that they do their job without leaning on the ratepayer.
As Mayor I would insist that Government effectively do their job in relation to education, police, justice, health and employment creation without leaning on our ratepayers for funding.
Council:
Cliff Lee born in the United States. Lived in California, Virginia, Indiana. Spent 2 years in the US Army, 5 years as an engineer in Germany and 2 years in South Africa. Travelled extensively in Europe and Eastern Europe during the height of the cold war. Scary stuff! New Zealand offered opportunities and a lifestyle that was superb and we were lucky to have been able to buy a small holding in Mamaku where we have lived for over 30 years. I have had a lifelong interest in politics, science and world history. I am able to recognise inadequate statistics, political stupidity and unnecessary, ineffective spending. I am reluctant to spend ratepayers' funds to carry out Central Government's responsibilities. Stopping the waste of ratepayers' money and improving employment opportunities for our young people would be my goal. Vote Cliff Lee for Councillor.
