I have 25 years IT experience (in computer programming), across 10 industries in 3 countries - I am very skilled at analysing problems and consulting with people.
I am the Deputy-Chair of Glenfield Community Board, and have been since 2008.
I'm also a certified RMA (Resource Management Act) Commissioner.
I have lived in Hillcrest for 23 years, I’m the Vice-Chairman of Sunnybrae Residents Association, and I’m on the Bayview Community Centre committee and Northcote Tennis club committee. [I have run the tennis club's email newsletters for 10 years, and created and updated the club's website www.northcotetennis.com - check it out, as an example of what I can do.]
I have lived in Sydney, Adelaide, London, and Philadelphia so know how really good public transport works.
I’m a keen and skilled tennis player, bridge player, and ceroc dancer.
I fought against the Whenuapai airport and Parity Place brothel plans.
I am now fighting for:
- free public transport (will free up the roads)
- intelligent phasing of all traffic lights (which they are capable of but are not set correctly)
- removing noisy car mufflers
I will oppose:
- more high-rise buildings in Birkenhead,
- any privatisation of Watercare.
I helped spend Glenfield Board’s limited funds very carefully, and will do the same at Kaipatiki Board - no wasteful projects.
Kaipatiki's budget will go a long way, big bang-per-buck, if I am there.
I now work only part-time, so can put real energy and hours into Kaipatiki Local Board (as I did on Glenfield Community Board).
I cannot see how candidates with full-time jobs elsewhere (as many KLB candidates have), can make a meaningful contribution to the 25+ hours/week workload expected on Kaipatiki Local Board. [ I was the only member of Glenfield Community Board who voted against increasing the number of public sites billboards could be put on.]

P.S. You won't see my billboards anywhere - I don't believe in spoiling your views of our attractive parks and reserves with big billboards that insult your intelligence and distract drivers. It seems to me that candidates who use large billboards (with no policy on them, just "Vote for xxx") ... have few new ideas, but don't mind paying big money and ruining the views of your parks, to get into office.
My message is here and in the candidate statements booklet (that accompanies your postal voting papers).
Top 5 Issues

- Removing noisy car mufflers from our streets

Personal Profile
I moved from Nelson to Auckland in 1972, to train as an Optometrist.
In '77 I switched to Science and completed a Bachelor of Science degree.
I commenced my computer programming career in '78, at NZ Forest Products, then did my OE in '80-'82, working in Philadelphia (USA) [at Philadelphia Stock Exchange, Chilton Publishing, and Dupont Chemicals] and Adelaide (Aust) [ working at Misubishi head office].
I returned to NZ in '82, bought my current home in Hillcrest, continuing my programming for GRE Insurance (now Vero), then as a contract programmer at Affco, FAI Insurance, Lion Corp, Reserve Bank, Repco, Telecom Directories (now Yellow), Clear (now TelstraClear) ... plus a 3-year stint in Wellington '88-'91 programming at Govt Life (now Tower), Dept of Labour and National Mutual.
My favorite past-times are bridge, ceroc dancing and tennis.
In my 30s I played regular bridge at Akarana Bridge club (which boasted most of the NZ team then), and competed in the trials for the NZ team.
I have done ceroc dancing for 6 years now, and am ranked as "Advanced".
I have played tennis at Northcote Tennis club, all year round for 24 years now, and am into my 6th year on the committee (where I put out all the email newsletters, and created and update it's website www.northcotetennis.com ).
