The global economy upon which we all depend will, in a handful of years, shift into a wide−ranging restructuring as the world reacts to the irrevocable decline in the supply of energy, particularly liquid fuels, otherwise known as peak oil. The evidence is incontrovertible. Nelsonians will have to develop a restructured local economy to supply our needs. The Nelson City Council should be at the forefront, providing leadership and expertise. The Council should strive to reduce its debt and consolidate its spending (no new arterial road, no performance centre, no construction on arable land) while engaging in detailed contingency planning to improve Nelson's resilience to economic shock. Food, water, and energy security are critical. All decisions should address the new reality of a continuous decrease in the supply of energy. If you too are concerned, vote for Carl Horn who will bring his integrity and analytical skills to the Council.
