“Nelson is one of the most beautiful, vibrant cities in the world. Let’s keep it that way.”
Bernard Downey has been actively involved in the community since he moved to Nelson almost 30 years ago. As a teacher at Nelson College he has taught thousands of young people. This has contributed to an appreciation and understanding of the issues affecting our community and the changes locals would like to see.
He has extensive financial expertise as well as practical experience to bring to the council table.
Bernard is serving his third term as Chairman of the Nelson YMCA . The YMCA in Nelson has over 50 employees and a payroll in excess of a million dollars.
Affordable rates are the key issue facing the Nelson community.
We are in the midst of a recession and Bernard wants to see council spending restrained to reduce budget deficits and curtail rate increases. This can be achieved by ensuring that council focuses on core activities, and limiting spending in accordance with tighter budget constraints.
As a city with so many positives, Bernard believes it’s vital that Nelson thrives and progresses in a way that enhances the environment and protects our unique waterfront. He is passionate about preserving our city’s assets and helping small businesses and local ventures flourish to create jobs and prosperity in the community.
