Annalucia Vermunt, Communist League, 42, meat worker − an active union member and campaigner for Maori rights. The capitalist economic crisis is devastating the lives of working people. We need to take political power out of the hands of the capitalist rulers. My campaign supports workers organising trade unions to combat attacks by the employers and government. I oppose cutting council services and facilities and imposing user charges. My campaign calls for a government−funded public works programme to create jobs and provide the housing, schools, hospitals, public transport and other services we need. I call for the immediate withdrawal of NZ troops from Afghanistan. I oppose NZ government bullying of Pacific nations like Fiji. My campaign champions struggles against racism and for the rights of women, Maori, and immigrants. For a copy of my election platform, email clauck@xtra.co.nz or phone (09)3691223. Personal Profile
Unlike the capitalist politicians contending for mayor and council in the October 9 city elections, who openly proclaim their support for big business, the Communist League is standing candidates to champion the needs of working people. Our interests as workers have nothing in common with the ruling rich.
We are living through the initial stages of an economic depression that is devastating living conditions for millions worldwide, combined with spreading wars abroad and attacks on our rights at home.
The amalgamation of Auckland into a so-called “Super City” has been imposed by the government in order to strengthen the domination of capital and the bureaucratic powers of local government over us. It will be used to cut back council services and facilities that benefit working people; to raise user charges, rates and fees, and set new ones; and to carry out attacks on the jobs, wages, and conditions of city workers.
The ruling politicians try to convince us that there is a limited pool of money in the city budget and, as it runs out, everything has to be cut back. But there is plenty of wealth in Auckland - and the world - to provide for what working people need. The real question is, which class rules and for whose benefit.
Workers face the need to act as a class if we are to fight against the attacks on us. We need to defend and extend union organisation on the job. We need to fight unemployment, which increases competition for work and lowers the incomes of all workers. We need to combat race, sex, and other discrimination used to divide us, and strengthen our class unity.
Working people and our unions need to break from giving political support to Labour, National, or the other parties and politicians that administer capital's dictatorship over us. We need our own voice.
The Communist League campaign explains the need for a revolutionary struggle by working people to conquer political power, overturn capitalist rule, expropriate their banks and corporations, and establish state property. Then we can use the wealth that our labour creates to meet our needs - the needs of the majority.
The Communist League candidates are presenting a platform of immediate demands around which working people can fight to defend ourselves against the devastating impact of the capitalist crisis, and build a movement to advance our class interests

It is clear to all the world wide economic crisis is continuing to unravel economic growth in New Zealand is stagnant and jobs in manfacturing have declined by some 20% over the last five years. The capitalist’s solution is to make working people pay by cutting jobs and wages, forcing speed up at the cost of life and limb of workers and cutting our social entitlements, all the while protecting the interests of big business. From the outset the Supercity has been a part of this increasing domination of capital, cutting jobs and cutting council services and facilities.
The Communist League campaign points to the need for working people to organize and act in our own interests, ultimately this means taking power out of the hands of the capitalist class and we as working people organizing society in the interests of humanity not big business.
The idea that we as Aucklanders share a common interest and goal is one of the myraid ways the capitalist rulers disguise the most fundamental division in society. The vast majority of us are working people we sell our labour to survive, and we produce the wealth in this city, as opposed to the tiny handful of capitalists who exploit our labour, and control local and national government.
The Communist League present a series of demands that we organize to fight around today to address the needs of working people in face of this crisis, our campaign platform, is available here on this website.
I want to focus on:
Jobs for all! We demand that the work that is available be shared rather than pitting workers against each other such as the 2,700 who applied for 150 jobs at New World Mt. Roskill in mid-August. Combine this with workers being paid a livable wage. That public works be organized to build the public housing, health clinics, public transport, child care that working people in this city need.
We demand no cuts to council services and facilities that working people use.
Communist League campaign supporters joined with teachers who marched down Queen St as part of their fight to win a union contract that provides not only a decent wage but reasonable job conditions– an example of the kind of action needed to defend our social entitlements.
To build the kind of movement that can bring about fundamental change we put forward a programme that seeks to build unity among working people and overcome the many racist, sexist and chauvinist obstacles fostered by the bosses. That is why the Communist League campaign fights for equal rights for immigrants, and demands the government stop the arrest and deportation of \"overstayers\". We call for immediate permanent residency for all undocumented immigrants who want to live and work here.
The Communist League campaign points to the need for working people to build solidarity with workers struggles worldwide, and recognize that victories for toilers elsewhere strengthens our hand as we march along the road towards workers taking power. That is why we demand New Zealand withdraw all armed forces and cops from Afghanistan and the Pacific now, that these countries be allowed to determine their future without the jack boot of imperialist intervention and call for an end to sanctions against Fiji.

check out other candidate's answersThe Communist League campaign joins with working people engaged in struggle to defend their rights, whether it be marching with striking teachers, or picket lines of workers at aircraft catering company; or communities organising to defend council services and facilities that are being cut. Already 1200 workers have lost their jobs as part of the reorganisation of Auckland City.
The Communist League campaign champions the interests of working people. The recent collapse of South Canterbury Finance is just the latest unraveling in the worldwide economic crisis. Young people are at the forefront of those being affected by the world economic crisis, growing unemployment, attacks on social services like education, police brutality and fighting the spreading wars in the world. 2.- 5. The Communist League campaign explains that the supercity will mean cuts to council services and facilities and we will join with young people in fighting these cuts.
