A resident of Wattle Downs, I have lived in Manurewa my entire life. I was elected onto the Manurewa Community Board in 2007, following in the footsteps of my late grandfather Cliff Morrin, who served as a Manurewa Borough councillor in the 1960s. I am the secretary of the St Lukes Anglican vestry, chairperson of the James Cook High School Board of Trustees and I previously served as a member of the Weymouth Primary School Board of Trustees.
I am the current Manurewa Town Centre manager. It is important to me that the new Manurewa Local Board preserves the “local” in local government, focus on the revitalisation of the town centre, and address the needs of local communities and neighbourhoods. I am very involved with residents’ groups in Wattle Downs, Weymouth, and Randwick Park.
In 2009 I worked with the Lions Club of Manurewa and the Alfriston Rotary Club to organise the highly successful Manurewa Santa Parade. Although that event was a great success, the clubs’ applications for funding were repeatedly declined. Subsequently I decided that I would stand as a candidate for the Wiri Licensing Trust in 2010 as I believe we need to get rid off a boys club attitude to decision making on funding applications. I will ensure there is equity across all Manurewa groups who apply for funding.
As a Trustee, I will also contribute to the governance of the organisation based on sound business decision-making. I want the Trust to pay down debt so that it can maximise its financial sponsorship available to local clubs and community groups. I also want the Trust to support projects led by residents’ groups.
A founding member for the Angels for Action charitable trust, I have previously helped raise thousands of dollars to support research and to provide support for the survivors of breast cancer. I am also involved in initiatives to raise funds for prostate cancer research and support.
I am proud to support initiatives that raise awareness of the dangers of high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes. In 2007 I co-sponsored a successful legal challenge to prohibit a Clendon retailer from selling or supplying BZP and other related party drugs.
I am committed to my community of Manurewa of which I am the 4th generation to have lived here and am proud to have contributed to the 5th and now 6th generation of my family in Manurewa. I have the experience and vision to drive our community through change, the passion to suceed and the determination to hang in there.
But I can't do it alone and I ask that when you vote for me you vote for all of my Action Team colleques so we have a clear mandate to move our community forward into the 21st century of decision making, change, and partnerships with critical stakeholders.
