With many changes planned in our area we need to ensure the quality of life we have in the Eastern suburbs remains.
There are zoning changes around the Kilbirnie and Lyall Bay areas being discussed which we need to keep a close eye on. We don't want low cost, low quality housing for an estimated 20,000 extra people without assurances the infrastructure and traffic management plan is adequate and that any development will enhance, not detract from our coastline, environment and community.
With much discussion about a city wide liquor ban that may extend to Newtown, we need to make sure that Newtown's problems don't become ours, and that we have strong strategies and controls in place to keep our streets safe and clean.
We have a beautiful city filled with creative, intelligent and resourceful people. Let's do everything we can to make them stay in Wellington, by improving our transport systems, giving ready access to world class technology, encouraging business and enterprise by minimising red tape and bureaucracy, and by continuing to promote our city to New Zealand and the world as one of the most desirable cities to live in and to visit.
Wellington needs fresh eyes and a new face on Council. I am a good listener and am known for getting things done, so let's work together to address the issues in the Eastern suburbs and make this an even better place to grow up, work, live, and grow old in.

Top 5 Issues
- Preserving the intergrity of our coast by ensuring any developments enhance and don't detract from it's natural beauty. Promoting Lyall Bay as Wellington's preferred playground by beautification of the area and providing better facilites for surfers, and families.
- Upgrading and invigoration of Kilbirnie and Miramar shopping areas so they are a pleasure for everyone in the community to visit; that the streets are safe and clean, and that businesses are not paralysed by never ending disruption during redevelopment.
- Encouraging and assisting local investment and enterprise. We want our communities to be vibrant and prosperous, with a heart, a soul and a spirit.
- Making more all weather sports facilities for the young people of our communities an absolute priority. We should be encouraging our young people to exercise and to be involved in sport for all the reasons of health, well-being, and becoming well rounded citizens who become an asset to our society.
- Making our streets clean and safe. Let's not let any changes in the liquor laws that could affect our area change the quality of life we enjoy.

We need to make this a community project - people get lost with the \'saving the world\' message, and we need to communicate to people how better Wellington would be, and how the benefits of recycling would benefit our lives.
Here are a few suggestions as how we should start to change our recycling culture:
1. Making recycling fun for children. Get the children to champion recycling - run school competitions on designing family recycling bins, making things out of recycled goods and encourage awareness that things often have more than one life.
2. Being more transparent about what happens to our recycled materials. Educate the public on the journey of recycled goods and how recycling impacts on our every day lives and the Wellington environment.
3. Upgrade landfills and provide more assistance. Last year I was in the UK and visited one of their landfill operations. I was so impressed with their recycling operations - things were sorted in minute detail and there was plenty of help on hand from willing helpers. It made me feel as if we were really doing something good - we need to make this a \'feel good\' experience.
4. Design better home collection bins. I live on the south coast and on a windy day there is more of my neighbours recycling on the road than there is left in the bin! We need well designed and easy to use bins - let\'s make this process a pleasure, not yet another chore.
